If governments are genuinely committed to stopping TB, they must seize all the opportunities that are available right now and all the opportunities that may come in the near future,&rdquo; Mr. Raviglione said.</font><br /><br /><font >The WHO recommended &ldquo;Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (DOTS)&rdquo; TB control regime has been recognized as a highly efficient and cost-effective strategy against the disease.</font><br /><br /><font >The strategy has five elements &not;&ndash; political commitment, microscopy services, drug availability, surveillance and monitoring systems, and the use of highly effective medicines with direct supervision of treatment. Once patients with infectious TB have been identified, health and community workers and trained volunteers observe and record patients taking the full course of the correct dosage of anti-TB medicines. Once patients with infectious TB have been identified, health and community workers and trained volunteers observe and record patients taking the full course of the correct dosage of anti-TB medicines.
