‘Government responsible for 68 farmers' suicide’

The Krushak Morcha of the BJP today held the Government responsible for the suicide of 68 farmers in the State.

Passing several resolutions in the first State executive committee meeting here, the farmers wing of the party attributed the suicide cases to the faulty agricultural policies of both the State and Central governments.

Alleging that farmers have been committing suicide due to crop loss and increasing loan burden, the resolution said that a majority of the affected farmers of the State are deprived of the benefit of the loan waiver scheme of the Centre.

The Krushak Morcha urged the Government to waive off farm loan of the farmers of the State.

The morcha lambasted the Government for its failure to check distress sale of paddy and other agricultural produce. Farmers are forced to sell paddy much below the minimum support price announced by the Centre due to the nexus between Government officials, rice mill owners and leaders of the ruling party, the resolution said.

Alleging that the farmers are not given the bonus amount by the Government procurement agencies, the morcha said recycling of the Rs 2-a-kg rice in the public distribution system has further compounded the farmers’ problem.

The BJP morcha expressed concern over allocation of water meant for irrigation to industries and acquisition of agricultural land for industrial purposes and urged the Government to stop collecting water cess from farmers who are not enjoying irrigation facility.

The resolution demanded completion of all the irrigation projects under construction and immediate implementation of the river linking project envisioned by former prime minister AB Vajpayee.

The morcha demanded revamping of the existing agricultural insurance policy by incorporating natural calamities like thunderstorm, hailstorm, pest attack on crop and crop damage by wild animals including pachyderms in the list for Government compensation to the farmers.

In a separate resolution, the morcha urged the Government to set up agri-based industries at block level and create employment opportunities for the unemployed youth of the farmer’s families.

Inaugurating the State executive committee meeting of the Krushak Morcha, State BJP president Jual Oram flayed the Government for giving a different colour to the farmer suicides.

It is unfortunate that the State Government is trying to cover up its inefficiency when Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar had already admitted that farmer suicides are due to crop loss and loan burden, he added.

He further alleged that the Government had miserably failed to check distress sale of paddy and recycling of specially subsidised BPL rice.

The meeting, presided by Krushak Morcha president Maheswar Sahu, was also addressed by former president Suresh Pujari, State organising secretary Panchanan Rout, general secretaries Nayan Nohanty, Murli Sharma, Pruthiraj Harichandan and Basant Panda.
