When contacted, Agriculture Secretary P K Basu told Business Standard, &ldquo;As of now, wheat and rice production in India has fairly stabilised, while pulses production is showing signs of improvement, hence we have decided to now focus more on millet and fodder, both of which form important part of the country&rsquo;s whole agriculture dynamics.&rdquo;<br />
<br />
He said fodder is of particular importance to the government as it has a direct impact on livestock production and yield.<br />
<br />
In India, fodder production is almost 60% less than the actual demand as a result of which though the country&rsquo;s livestock population is among the biggest in the world, its yield is lowest.<br />
<br />
&ldquo;Fodder can be grown in dry land areas which receive scanty rainfall and act as a good source to supplement incomes for farmers,&rdquo; Basu said.<br />
<br />
He said the districts covered for production of millet and fodder would be less than that for pulses.<br />
<br />
Under the NFSM pulses, government has identified 171 districts across the country where per hectare yield is less than the national average. The state governments are required to incorporate funds allocated under NFSM in their annual budgets and also show compliance report to the Centre.<br />
<br />
Funds for all sorts of activities targeted at increasing production of wheat, rice and pulses are fixed by the central government disbursed under various heads.<br />
<br />
Pulses production in 2010-2011 is expected to rise by almost 13% to 16.51 million tonnes because of good rains and targeted interventions by the government.<br />
<br />
&ldquo;We definitely need to increase fodder availability as livestock yield depends directly on them, but it certainly does not involve just allocating more land for them. Instead, we should focus on other methods of raising fodder availability as well,&rdquo; said Director of National Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research (NCAP), Dr Ramesh Chand.<br />
<br />
NFSM was launched in 2007 with the aim to increase wheat production by 8 million tonnes, rice by 10 million tonnes and pulses by 2 million tonnes by 2011-2012.<br />
<br />

<strong>Govt likely to bring millet, fodder under food security mission by Sanjeeb Mukherjee</strong></h1>

<br /><div align="justify">Buoyed by its success in increasing pulses production in India through effective implementation of National Food Security Mission (NFSM), the government is likely to bring production of millet and fodder under the mission’s ambit in the forthcoming Budget.<br /><br />The programme which will be on the lines of accelerated pulses production programme (A3P) is expected to be operationalised in the next one year.<br /><br />Officials said this programme, which would be part of NFSM as was the case with A3P and programmes for rice and wheat, could be announced in the Budget, to be tabled on February 28.<br /><br />When contacted, Agriculture Secretary P K Basu told Business Standard, “As of now, wheat and rice production in India has fairly stabilised, while pulses production is showing signs of improvement, hence we have decided to now focus more on millet and fodder, both of which form important part of the country’s whole agriculture dynamics.”<br /><br />He said fodder is of particular importance to the government as it has a direct impact on livestock production and yield.<br /><br />In India, fodder production is almost 60% less than the actual demand as a result of which though the country’s livestock population is among the biggest in the world, its yield is lowest.<br /><br />“Fodder can be grown in dry land areas which receive scanty rainfall and act as a good source to supplement incomes for farmers,” Basu said.<br /><br />He said the districts covered for production of millet and fodder would be less than that for pulses.<br /><br />Under the NFSM pulses, government has identified 171 districts across the country where per hectare yield is less than the national average. The state governments are required to incorporate funds allocated under NFSM in their annual budgets and also show compliance report to the Centre.<br /><br />Funds for all sorts of activities targeted at increasing production of wheat, rice and pulses are fixed by the central government disbursed under various heads.<br /><br />Pulses production in 2010-2011 is expected to rise by almost 13% to 16.51 million tonnes because of good rains and targeted interventions by the government.<br /><br />“We definitely need to increase fodder availability as livestock yield depends directly on them, but it certainly does not involve just allocating more land for them. Instead, we should focus on other methods of raising fodder availability as well,” said Director of National Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research (NCAP), Dr Ramesh Chand.<br /><br />NFSM was launched in 2007 with the aim to increase wheat production by 8 million tonnes, rice by 10 million tonnes and pulses by 2 million tonnes by 2011-2012.<br /><br />“We have very strongly realised that the approach of identifying districts and then taking a targeted approach to increase production there does show good results,” Basu added.</div> </font>

<strong>Govt likely to bring millet, fodder under food security mission by Sanjeeb Mukherjee</strong></h1>

<br /><div align="justify">Buoyed by its success in increasing pulses production in India through effective implementation of National Food Security Mission (NFSM), the government is likely to bring production of millet and fodder under the mission’s ambit in the forthcoming Budget.<br /><br />The programme which will be on the lines of accelerated pulses production programme (A3P) is expected to be operationalised in the next one year.<br /><br />Officials said this programme, which would be part of NFSM as was the case with A3P and programmes for rice and wheat, could be announced in the Budget, to be tabled on February 28.<br /><br />When contacted, Agriculture Secretary P K Basu told Business Standard, “As of now, wheat and rice production in India has fairly stabilised, while pulses production is showing signs of improvement, hence we have decided to now focus more on millet and fodder, both of which form important part of the country’s whole agriculture dynamics.”<br /><br />He said fodder is of particular importance to the government as it has a direct impact on livestock production and yield.<br /><br />In India, fodder production is almost 60% less than the actual demand as a result of which though the country’s livestock population is among the biggest in the world, its yield is lowest.<br /><br />“Fodder can be grown in dry land areas which receive scanty rainfall and act as a good source to supplement incomes for farmers,” Basu said.<br /><br />He said the districts covered for production of millet and fodder would be less than that for pulses.<br /><br />Under the NFSM pulses, government has identified 171 districts across the country where per hectare yield is less than the national average. The state governments are required to incorporate funds allocated under NFSM in their annual budgets and also show compliance report to the Centre.<br /><br />Funds for all sorts of activities targeted at increasing production of wheat, rice and pulses are fixed by the central government disbursed under various heads.<br /><br />Pulses production in 2010-2011 is expected to rise by almost 13% to 16.51 million tonnes because of good rains and targeted interventions by the government.<br /><br />“We definitely need to increase fodder availability as livestock yield depends directly on them, but it certainly does not involve just allocating more land for them. Instead, we should focus on other methods of raising fodder availability as well,” said Director of National Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research (NCAP), Dr Ramesh Chand.<br /><br />NFSM was launched in 2007 with the aim to increase wheat production by 8 million tonnes, rice by 10 million tonnes and pulses by 2 million tonnes by 2011-2012.<br /><br />“We have very strongly realised that the approach of identifying districts and then taking a targeted approach to increase production there does show good results,” Basu added.</div> </font>
