Taking a leaf from success stories in China, the Ministry has also proposed a task force on promotion of hybrid rice and envisioned pushing for private sector participation.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >Although a section of environmental activists in Kolkata have already raised their voice against the plans for an Eastern India Green Revolution, CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has welcomed the initiative. In a workshop which discussed the possibilities of the agricultural 'revolution', Bhattacharjee along with his Agriculture minister Naren De appreciated the initiative taken by Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar. Speaking at the workshop, Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said a strong delivery mechanism should be created for the initiative.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >Pawar said that while productivity of rice is 3.3 tonne per hectare in India, China's production is almost double of that. The Ministry, he said, had also noted that while almost 63 per cent of the land under rice cultivation in China produces the hybrid variety, the figure for India was a meagre 3 per cent. &quot;A task force on promotion of hybrid rice should be created at the national level for more aggressive promotion,&quot; Pawar said. The task force, to be headed by an additional secretary, will hold periodic meetings with the eastern region states and work out a blue print for increasing area under hybrid rice. In a workshop which discussed the possibilities of the agricultural 'revolution', Bhattacharjee along with his Agriculture minister Naren De appreciated the initiative taken by Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar. Speaking at the workshop, Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said a strong delivery mechanism should be created for the initiative.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >Pawar said that while productivity of rice is 3.3 tonne per hectare in India, China's production is almost double of that. The Ministry, he said, had also noted that while almost 63 per cent of the land under rice cultivation in China produces the hybrid variety, the figure for India was a meagre 3 per cent. &quot;A task force on promotion of hybrid rice should be created at the national level for more aggressive promotion,&quot; Pawar said. Govt pushes China model for 'Eastern Green Revolution'

The government has come forward with a proposal to replicate the Chinese Green Revolution model in the eastern states and promote hybrid rice on a mission mode in the region. Taking a leaf from success stories in China, the Ministry has also proposed a task force on promotion of hybrid rice and envisioned pushing for private sector participation. Although a section of environmental activists in Kolkata have already raised their voice against the plans for an Eastern India Green Revolution, CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has welcomed the initiative. In a workshop which discussed the possibilities of the agricultural 'revolution', Bhattacharjee along with his Agriculture minister Naren De appreciated the initiative taken by Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar. Speaking at the workshop, Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said a strong delivery mechanism should be created for the initiative. Pawar said that while productivity of rice is 3.3 tonne per hectare in India, China's production is almost double of that. The Ministry, he said, had also noted that while almost 63 per cent of the land under rice cultivation in China produces the hybrid variety, the figure for India was a meagre 3 per cent. "A task force on promotion of hybrid rice should be created at the national level for more aggressive promotion," Pawar said. The task force, to be headed by an additional secretary, will hold periodic meetings with the eastern region states and work out a blue print for increasing area under hybrid rice. It will also devise strategies to create clusters of villages adopting hybrid rice so that procurement centers are opened to provide marketing support to farmers. Meanwhile, the Ministry is also looking at possible public-private-partnerships in the areas like development of hybrid seeds. "There are almost 3,000 seed companies in China. A lot of seed companies have also come into India. We will only have to ensure that the quality of the seed is maintained. We are trying to encourage private sectors to venture through public-private-partnership model," he said.
