Presently, the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act covers up to class 8: Children up to the age of 14 years are eligible to get free and compulsory education till class 8 in any school.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The Centre now wants to extend free education for two more years.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">The pros and cons of such a move was discussed at a meeting of officials of Union ministry of human resource development (MHRD) and principal secretaries (education) of all states in Delhi last week, sources in the MHRD said.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">However, a formal proposition or draft is yet to be prepared and none of the states presented any plan for it, the sources added. &ldquo;The discussion took place taking into consideration the financial implications in terms of infrastructure, human resources and quality of education, if the reach of the RTE is extended up to class 10,&rdquo; the MHRD officials said.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">&ldquo;They also discussed whether the views of private schools on giving admission to students belong to the economical weaker sections (EWS) till class 10 should be taken into consideration.
