Great journalists and stewards |
PADMA Shri laureate Barkha Dutt and Veer Sanghvi are names that have ruled the world of English journalism for decades, and are still going strong. But today, they are seen acting as the stewards of the government. Due to these two great journalists, a new dangerous and dirtier amalgam of journalism, bureaucracy and corporate world has come to forefront. The public of the nation is in a state of shock to see how Barkha Dutt, the group editor and anchor of NDTV, and Veer Sanghvi, former editor of Hindustan Times, and present editorial advisor and columnist, have put the credibility of journalism at stake, getting allured by the aura of money. Back in 2006, Telecom Minister A Raja met Barkha Dutt, Veer Sanghvi and Neera Radia in hotel Taj Mansingh. A series of between then began Neera and Raja as per the CBI sources. For as many as 300 days, Neera’s phone was tapped. And, as per the revelations, it’s clear that even Barkha and Veer were involved. However, when the CBI and the anti-corruption branch started investigations into the telecom scam, a case was only registered against Radia, on 21st October 2009. It was found that Radia, through her 4 companies, was acting as a middle person for the corporate sectors related to these companies, telecom, aviation, power and infrastructure. For her self-interest, she was using these top journalists as pawns and paying exorbitant amounts as well to them. When Vineet Aggarwal, DIG Anti-Corruption Bureau of CBI, got evidences in this case, he asked for information related to Radia from IRS Milaap Jain, of the income-tax headquarters’ investigation department. It was revealed by Ashish Aberal, Joint Director of the department, that Radia was already under suspicion. And, that’s why, with the consent of the home secretary, her phone was being taped. Meanwhile, news was out that Radia was using these two journalists to earn profits for Tatas and Ambanis through Vaishnavi Corporate Consultants, Noasis Consulting, Vitcom and Newcom Consulting. With the help of their contacts, Barkha and Sanghvi used to help the ministers to get through to the departments that would be favourable to these corporate houses. As per the evidence, they were involved in this dirty game from a long time. But, the cat came out the bag only when A Raja became the minister of communication and information technology. Even the prime minister was not in favour of the controversy-clad man being made the minister. But, the two so-called eminent journalists played games tactfully in the Congress corridor. Hence, the PM was forced to take him in as the communication minister. Even Sonia Gandhi felt helpless. The investigations further revealed that the trinity of Radia, Barkha and Veer is quite old. They are the people who have worked on the highest of the government’s posts, and have all the information on the workings of the administration. However, the ‘investigations’ are still continuing. Vineet Aggarwal, who dug out the truth, has been transferred. Neera is absconding from the country fearing her arrest. And, the media, which is known to create havoc over every small issue, is keeping its mouth shut. So, who will speak up against these great journalists. |
