Taking last year's data into account, the region's groundwater level has increased,&quot; he said.</p><p style="text-align: justify">There are about 875 stations of the GSDA across eight districts of the region to measure the groundwater level. Due to severe drought conditions last year, the level was severely affected.</p><p style="text-align: justify">&quot;However, the groundwater levels in Soyegaon, Kannad and Gangapur taluka of Aurangabad district have fallen by over a metre. Besides, Deglur taluka in Nanded, Vashi in Osmanabad and Kej in Beed have recorded similar depletion,&quot; Salve said.</p><p style="text-align: justify">He said depletion in water levels up to a metre is manageable. &quot;However, if the levels fall by up to 1-2 mt, precautions should be taken. Groundwater level in Marathwada rises by 1.8 metres this year: Groundwater Survey Development Agency -Himanshu Nitnaware

-The Times of India   AURANGABAD: The groundwater level in the Marathwada region has increased by 1.8 metres till May 2014 as compared to the corresponding period last year, according to a pre-monsoon survey conducted recently by the Groundwater Survey Development Agency (GSDA). Last year, the groundwater level till May was recorded at 11.44 mt, while this year it stood at 9.64 mt till the same period. Deputy director of GSDA, P L Salve, said the ground water level is much better as compared to last year, when the region faced acute water shortage. "Overall, the situation is positive. Taking last year's data into account, the region's groundwater level has increased," he said. There are about 875 stations of the GSDA across eight districts of the region to measure the groundwater level. Due to severe drought conditions last year, the level was severely affected. "However, the groundwater levels in Soyegaon, Kannad and Gangapur taluka of Aurangabad district have fallen by over a metre. Besides, Deglur taluka in Nanded, Vashi in Osmanabad and Kej in Beed have recorded similar depletion," Salve said. He said depletion in water levels up to a metre is manageable. "However, if the levels fall by up to 1-2 mt, precautions should be taken. Similarly, if the groundwater levels decline by 2-3 mt, there is need to enforce a scarcity management plan," Salve said. Salve said that there is no reason for worry for at least a month. Depending on the rainfall, preparations would be made accordingly, he added. Talking about the reasons for groundwater depletion, he said, "Though the amount of rainfall in the region over the last few years has been the same, the number of rainy days has reduced recently.
