Both states have among the lowest proportion of marginal farmers. The analysis of 18 states found that the three states with the highest suicide rates are Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. The study says that suicide rates tend to be higher in states with greater economic disparity. The study found farmers at highest risk to have three characteristics: Those who grow cash crops such as coffee and cotton; those with ‘marginal' farms of less than one hectare; and those with debts of Rs. 300 or more.
