-The Economic Times
The Haryana government on Friday imposed a ban on the week-long workers' strike at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant by passing prohibitory orders, seeking to find a solution through legal recourse to the issue which threatens to spiral into a labour unrest in India's biggest auto hub.
Despite the government mounting pressure by deploying additional police force at the factory on late Friday evening, workers have decided to continue with the strike till their demand for an independent union is met. "Our strike will continue as pressure tactics from the Maruti management will not dissuade us from pursuing our legal right to form independent union," said Shiv Kumar, general secretary of the newly-formed Maruti Suzuki Employees Union. Labour unions of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI), Rico Auto, Satyam Auto and Omaxe Auto have sent notices on Friday, asking for intervention of their managements to settle the labour problems at Maruti. "The notice to our company is our effort to find a solution to Maruti workers' issues. It's a solidarity move where we will resort to strike as a last resort if there is no effective solution," said Raj Kumar, president, Rico Auto Workers' Union (Daruhera). The government may resort to forcible eviction of workers, who are locked up inside the factory, through a late night operation. according to senior Haryana government officials. "We have taken a pro-active stand on the issue and will not permit anybody to take dispute into their own hands. We have bridging the gap between Maruti and the workers by referring the matter to the request authority for right adjudication," said Haryana Industry minister Randeep Sujrewala. The government has also referred the matter of the employees' strike to the local labour court in Gurgaon under the provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947. "We have set three months for the adjudication process within legal framework of the Industrial Dispute Act, 1947," said a labour department official with the Haryana government.
