                <div align="justify">-The Times of India</div><p align="justify"><br /><em>NEW DELHI: </em>Women scholars, politicians and activists from across South Asia expressed concern over escalation of violence, fundamentalism and increased militarization of response to people's movements and urged inclusion of women in peace building.</p><p align="justify">At a seminar organized by UN Women, SAFHR and IDRC on Tuesday, Rebeca Tavares of UN Women said, &quot;Women and men experience war differently. There is a need to convincingly demonstrate that engaging women in peace talks will benefit everyone... Women need to be at the forefront of reconstruction.&quot;</p><p align="justify">CPM politburo member Brinda Karat lashed out at the US for its overt and covert support to fundamentalists which has a wide-ranging influence on the region's women. &quot;Who are the forces or companies that benefit from militarization? This (South Asia) region has been affected by the politics of the ruling class who have sought to ally themselves with the West, especially, the US. Our main fight is confronting the ruling class in our countries,&quot; said Karat.</p><p align="justify">Though UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women ( CEDAW) is a recognition of violence against women, it needs to be implemented at the grassroots.</p><p align="justify">Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission chief Sima Samar said, &quot;In our country, we have kept it (CEDAW) on the shelf because we (women) are the honour and property of our men. Similarly, UN Security Council's Resolution 1325 is a recognition of our existence on this planet. But, in our country - which is at war for 35 years - women were not counted as we were not holding the gun. We were seen as part of the problem and not included in the solution.&quot;</p><p align="justify">Speaking about the Pakistan experience, Awami National Party's Bushra Gohar said, &quot;There's a lot of talk about peace processes. These are means to reach a compromise that is generally about women's rights. Recently, we wanted to launch Malala's book at Peshawar University. There is a need to convincingly demonstrate that engaging women in peace talks will benefit everyone... Women need to be at the forefront of reconstruction.&quot;</p><p align="justify">CPM politburo member Brinda Karat lashed out at the US for its overt and covert support to fundamentalists which has a wide-ranging influence on the region's women. &quot;Who are the forces or companies that benefit from militarization? This (South Asia) region has been affected by the politics of the ruling class who have sought to ally themselves with the West, especially, the US. Our main fight is confronting the ruling class in our countries,&quot; said Karat.</p><p align="justify">Though UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women ( CEDAW) is a recognition of violence against women, it needs to be implemented at the grassroots.</p><p align="justify">Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission chief Sima Samar said, &quot;In our country, we have kept it (CEDAW) on the shelf because we (women) are the honour and property of our men. Similarly, UN Security Council's Resolution 1325 is a recognition of our existence on this planet. But, in our country - which is at war for 35 years - women were not counted as we were not holding the gun. We were seen as part of the problem and not included in the solution.&quot;</p><p align="justify">Speaking about the Pakistan experience, Awami National Party's Bushra Gohar said, &quot;There's a lot of talk about peace processes. These are means to reach a compromise that is generally about women's rights. Recently, we wanted to launch Malala's book at Peshawar University. Jamaat-e-Islami and Imran Khan's government stopped the launch.&quot;</p><p align="justify">Currently, there is a lot of talk in Pakistan about the need for a dialogue with the Taliban. &quot;Some people told me that launching Malala's book could disrupt the peace process. Do we want the peace of the graveyard?&quot; said Gohar.</p>'
