Normal life has been disrupted in many parts of India after the country's main opposition parties began a 12-hour strike to protest against the increase in prices of fuel. West Bengal, Kerala and Bihar states along with Mumbai were worst affected. Businesses were shut, schools and colleges closed and public transport thin in the affected states. The government has raised fuel prices - a move that will add nearly one percentage point to the inflation rate. The Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies and the Communist parties have given separate strike calls against the rise in fuel prices. In Communist-ruled West Bengal and Kerala states, shops were closed, traffic was thin and roads were deserted, reports said. Examinations were also postponed in Kerala. 'Insensitive' Bangalore city in the south, which is home to over 1,500 info-tech companies, has shut down because of the strike, says a correspondent. Schools, colleges and businesses are closed and public transport is off the roads. Bangalore is the capital of Karnataka state, which is ruled by the BJP. In Mumbai, in the west of the country, taxis and auto rickshaws stayed off the roads, though the city's suburban train network was running. Many commuters preferred to stay at home fearing that they would be stranded on way to work, and attendance in offices was thin. The strike was also successful in parts of Bihar, a state ruled by a regional party along with the BJP - several trains were stopped by strikers, reports said. The capital, Delhi, and the southern city of Chennai were not affected in the early hours of the strike with schools and businesses open and normal traffic on the roads. Senior BJP leader LK Advani has asked the people to make the strike a success to highlight the "insensitivity of the government". The fuel price rise followed the government's decision last month to scrap its subsidy of petrol prices in an effort to cut its budget deficit. India's fiscal deficit is forecast to hit 5.5% of GDP by 2010-11. Allowing the price of petrol to be decided by the market has added about 3.5 rupees (£0.05; $0.08) to the price of a litre of petrol. Diesel prices will be increased by 2 rupees a litre, and kerosene will be raised by 3 rupees. The government has ruled out a rollback of prices.
