The statistics present a grim picture of the inadequate child care infrastructure in hospitals run by the civic administration or the government besides the absence of specialists for treating the infants.<br /><br />Though doctors here claimed that the administration's efforts to reduce the child mortality rate has yielded good results in recent times, given the previous history of high incidents of deaths, the life saving services such as treatment of malaria, pneumonia, diarrhoea and malnutrition are in adequate and in accessible for all.<br /><br />The highest infant mortality has been recorded at the adivasi taluka of Shahapur where as many as 47 infant deaths have been reported from April - July 2012. While medical officials here are quick to point an accusing finger at the tribal families faith in the local birth attendants who are ill-equipped with the skills for safe delivery, questions are raised on the state-sponsored programme to educate them on basic hygiene and other child protection systems.<br /><br />A district health officer told TOI that a majority of the infant deaths in Thane are from the tribal pockets. Infant mortality rate alarms health officials in Thane-Nitin Yeshwantrao

-The Times of India THANE: With 252 infants reported to have died soon after birth in the last four months (April -July 2012) in Thane district, the health department's initiatives to save premature babies or those affected by illness has come under severe scrutiny. The cause of major worry is the high rate of new born mortality here as, out of the 252 infants who died 152 were less than a year old. The statistics present a grim picture of the inadequate child care infrastructure in hospitals run by the civic administration or the government besides the absence of specialists for treating the infants. Though doctors here claimed that the administration's efforts to reduce the child mortality rate has yielded good results in recent times, given the previous history of high incidents of deaths, the life saving services such as treatment of malaria, pneumonia, diarrhoea and malnutrition are in adequate and in accessible for all. The highest infant mortality has been recorded at the adivasi taluka of Shahapur where as many as 47 infant deaths have been reported from April - July 2012. While medical officials here are quick to point an accusing finger at the tribal families faith in the local birth attendants who are ill-equipped with the skills for safe delivery, questions are raised on the state-sponsored programme to educate them on basic hygiene and other child protection systems. A district health officer told TOI that a majority of the infant deaths in Thane are from the tribal pockets. Thane district has the highest 13 per cent tribal population with most of them dependent on agriculture and allied industries for their source of income. The Jawahar and the Mokhada talukas, home to the Warli and the Mahadeo Koli community, here have recorded a 23 and 19 deaths respectively, while the Vikramgadh taluka on the foothills of the mountain has reported 23 infant deaths in the last four months. Palghar taluka has reported 39 infant deaths. In the interior Talasari taluka, the incidents of infant death reported during the same period was 10 while Wada and Dahanu talukas have reported 14 and 23 deaths respectively. The lowest infant mortality reported is from Ambernath which has just two incidents of infant deaths, possibly due to easy access to relatively better health care systems.
