Infant Mortality Rate in J&K 4% Lower Than National Figure

Jammu:  For the second time in a row, Jammu and Kashmir has emerged as the number one state this year for providing better primary health care service, achieving 43 per cent infant mortality lower than the national average of 47 per cent.

"The rate of infant mortality in Jammu and Kashmir has come down to 43 per cent which is better than the national average of 47 per cent," an official spokesman said, releasing the achievements of the department of Health and Medical Education for 2012.

He said J&K has been the number one state in the country for the second consecutive year for providing better primary health care service.

J&K government has formulated Village Health Sanitation and Nutrition Committees and 96 specialists, 810 staff nurses and 921 para-medicals were placed in various rural health institutions, he said.

He also said that a super-speciality hospital has been set up at Jammu and Out Patient Door (OPD) blocks of district hospitals at Reasi and Lel Ded Hospital have been completed besides emergency and OPD block at CHC complex at Chenani, Udhampur.

Two new maternity hospitals at Srinagar and Jammu each having a capacity of 200 beds at an estimated cost of Rs 50 crores have been sanctioned and taken up for execution.

As many as 334 additional doctors and paramedics have been engaged on contract basis under NHRM, he said, adding that remuneration of doctors engaged on contract basis under the mission has been enhanced to Rs 25,000 per month from Rs 19,200.

Besides, four additional specialised newborn care units have been operationalised in district hospitals at Kargil, Baramulla, Handwara and Poonch.
