Announcing this, chief minister Tarun Gogoi today said his government was also making a strong case with the Centre to declare tea as the national drink.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Speaking at the inaugural function of the World Tea Science Congress at Tocklai Experimental Station (under Tea Research Association) here today, Gogoi said, &ldquo;I, as the chief minister, am competent enough to announce tea as the state drink of Assam.&rdquo; He said granting the status of state drink to tea would help increase its value and promote Assam tea, which has a special place among the teas of the world, as a brand. The announcement fulfils the promise made by state industry and commerce minister Pradyut Bordoloi to the tea industry in September this year.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Assam contributes more than 51 per cent of the country&rsquo;s tea and 13 per cent of global production. The Assam tea industry employs about five lakh permanent workers and five lakh seasonal workers. Another 10 lakh are dependent on it for employment and services.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Gogoi said his government has been trying to urge the Centre to declare tea as the national drink. Bhanu said he had prepared a plan to take the industry forward and would act as its friend, philosopher and guide. He said he would extend all possible help to small tea growers. Tea Research Association chairman D.P. Maheshwari said the organisation had acquired world class infrastructure for the station and formed a corpus fund of Rs 6 crore for setting up centenary chairs from the Rs 20-crore grant given by the Centre to the organisation on Tocklai’s centenary.
