Jairam blames ‘juvenile’ media

-The Telegraph Rural development minister Jairam Ramesh today criticised the media for reporting that he had offered to quit the government and work for the party, calling it “juvenile” and refusing to answer any political questions. “No political questions... the most juvenile media I have ever come across,” Ramesh told reporters at the beginning of a news conference convened to release the Wasteland Atlas of India. Sections of the media were abuzz yesterday with reports that at least four ministers — Ramesh, Salman Khurshid, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Vayalar Ravi — had written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi informing her of their intention to quit the government and work for the organisation. Dismissing the reports that suggested he had written such a letter, Ramesh said these are “not worth commenting on”. The Congress leadership suspects one particular minister was behind the eruption of the resignation row and he has been firmly asked to mend his ways. Party sources claimed Sonia Gandhi was extremely upset yesterday about the reports that had the potential or deepening the perception of paralysis and hence she took up the matter promptly. The minister was pulled up yesterday itself when he went to Sonia’s residence to attend a meeting to discuss Parliament strategy. Sources said while Sonia conveyed her displeasure to the minister separately, Pranab Mukherjee also pulled him up. The minister, who has had a phenomenal rise in the party and the government, tried to explain that he had already denied the resignation report and he was not behind the “plant”. Nobody disputes the minister’s commitment to work and efficiency. A few Congress leaders wondered if the minister would have initially given the impression of a resignation chain without the knowledge of someone from among the top leadership. The party today felt that adequate attempts were not made to tackle the resignation drama. AICC media department chairperson Janardan Dwivedi asserted that no resignation offer, written or oral, had been made by any minister.
