Purandeswari, the union Minster of state for Human Resource Development, informed rajya sabha during the winter session in reply to a member&rsquo;s question from Mr. Parimal Nathwani.</font><br /><br /><font >These seven states of India have as much as 57.8 per cent illiterates as per the Census 2001; of which 59.4 per cent were male and 57 per cent were female illiterates. In accordance with the statistics submitted along with the answer, Jharkhand had 1.02 crore illiterate persons in the age group of seven years and above; with 0.37 crore male and 0.65 crore female illiterates.</font><br /><br /><font >Uttar Pradesh figured the maximum number of 5.88 crore illiterate persons in the age group of seven years and above; with 2.21 crore male and 3.67 crore female illiterates. Chhattisgarh figured the least number of 0.61 crore illiterate persons in the age group of seven years and above; with 0.20 crore male and 0.41 crore female illiterates. Bihar contained the second highest of 3.51 crore illiterate with 1.40 crore male and 2.11 crore female illiterates.</font><br /><br /><font >Mr. Nathwani had also wanted to know about the details of steps taken to increase literacy, especially in these states. The minister informed that to give impetus to female literacy, a new variant of the National Literacy Mission was launched on 8th September 2009, with the objective of providing opportunities in continuing education, basic education (equivalency), skill development and functional literacy to adults, especially women, in the age group of 15 years and above.</font><br /><br /><font >Mrs. Purandeswari also stated that one of the specific goals of the program was to reduce gender gap in literacy to 10 per cent as against 21 per cent as indicated in the Census of 2001. Purandeswari, the union Minster of state for Human Resource Development, informed rajya sabha during the winter session in reply to a member&amp;rsquo;s question from Mr. Parimal Nathwani.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font &gt;These seven states of India have as much as 57.8 per cent illiterates as per the Census 2001; of which 59.4 per cent were male and 57 per cent were female illiterates. In accordance with the statistics submitted along with the answer, Jharkhand had 1.02 crore illiterate persons in the age group of seven years and above; with 0.37 crore male and 0.65 crore female illiterates.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font &gt;Uttar Pradesh figured the maximum number of 5.88 crore illiterate persons in the age group of seven years and above; with 2.21 crore male and 3.67 crore female illiterates. Chhattisgarh figured the least number of 0.61 crore illiterate persons in the age group of seven years and above; with 0.20 crore male and 0.41 crore female illiterates. Bihar contained the second highest of 3.51 crore illiterate with 1.40 crore male and 2.11 crore female illiterates.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font &gt;Mr. Nathwani had also wanted to know about the details of steps taken to increase literacy, especially in these states. The minister informed that to give impetus to female literacy, a new variant of the National Literacy Mission was launched on 8th September 2009, with the objective of providing opportunities in continuing education, basic education (equivalency), skill development and functional literacy to adults, especially women, in the age group of 15 years and above.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font &gt;Mrs. Purandeswari also stated that one of the specific goals of the program was to reduce gender gap in literacy to 10 per cent as against 21 per cent as indicated in the Census of 2001. As women constituted a majority of the targeted beneficiaries, the program had been given gender treatment, the minister said and added that districts having low adult female literacy rate of 50 per cent or below, as per Census of 2001, alone were eligible for coverage under this programme.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&#039;

Jharkhand Among 7 Most Illiterate States

Jharkhand is one of seven states of India having large number of illiterate persons. The other states, where large number of illiterate persons resides, are Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Mrs. D. Purandeswari, the union Minster of state for Human Resource Development, informed rajya sabha during the winter session in reply to a member’s question from Mr. Parimal Nathwani. These seven states of India have as much as 57.8 per cent illiterates as per the Census 2001; of which 59.4 per cent were male and 57 per cent were female illiterates. In accordance with the statistics submitted along with the answer, Jharkhand had 1.02 crore illiterate persons in the age group of seven years and above; with 0.37 crore male and 0.65 crore female illiterates. Uttar Pradesh figured the maximum number of 5.88 crore illiterate persons in the age group of seven years and above; with 2.21 crore male and 3.67 crore female illiterates. Chhattisgarh figured the least number of 0.61 crore illiterate persons in the age group of seven years and above; with 0.20 crore male and 0.41 crore female illiterates. Bihar contained the second highest of 3.51 crore illiterate with 1.40 crore male and 2.11 crore female illiterates. Mr. Nathwani had also wanted to know about the details of steps taken to increase literacy, especially in these states.
