                <font ><br /></font><div align="justify"><font >Very soon, finger prints would become the key to foodgrains at the public distribution system (PDS) outlets in Jharkhand.</font><br /><br /><font >Having given its nod to induct about 12 lakh new families in the list of people below the poverty line (BPL), the Jharkhand Government has decided to go in for high-tech mechanism for distribution of foodgrains to the beneficiaries of the public distribution system (PDS) across the state.</font><br /><br /><font >In keeping with the modules adopted by the Unique Identity Development Authority of India (UIDAI) for doling out unique identity number to each individuals, Deputy Commissioners of all the districts have been asked to install biometric verification system to do away with fraudulent distribution of subsidised foodgrains from the PDS shops.</font><br /><br /><font >&nbsp;&ldquo;The State government had decided to go in for high-tech way of monitoring PDS functioning in the way of reports about rampant irregularities in the system,&rdquo; Chief Minister Arjun Munda told the iGovernment.</font><br /><br /><font >Food and Civil Supplies Secretary BK Tripathi said that the scheme would be implemented across the state in tandem with the UIDAI operation, which has been flagged off in Ranchi and other districts. &ldquo;If everything goes as per the plan, we will have a foolproof system for PDS operation in the next couple of months,&rdquo; Tripathi said.</font><br /><br /><font >Explaining the system for monitoring the foodgrain distribution, Munda said, &ldquo;in the biometric system, nobody could receive foodgrains furnishing ration cards of others.&rdquo; Besides, the Rural Development Department has been asked to install a central service at Ranchi for continuous monitoring of procurement and distribution of foodgrains under the PDS operation.</font><br /><br /><font >&ldquo;All transactions will be traceable with the system identifying every detail with time,&rdquo; Munda said.</font><br /><br /><font >The move assumes considerable significance in the wake of poor rainfalls in the state during the monsoon, which resulted in sowing of barely 30 per cent of paddy.
