The provisional data shows that the child sex ratio (0 to 6 years of age) has fallen from 941 in 2001 to 859 in 2011.<br /><br />Not only this, JK&rsquo;s overall sex ratio has been pegged at 883 females per 1000 males indicating a fall of 9 points compared to 2001 Census, according to provisional figures. While the ratio is 940 at India level, JK along with Bihar (916) and Gujarat (918) has shown decline in sex ratio in comparison to last Census.<br /><br />&ldquo;It is disturbing and unfortunate that the figures (child sex ratio and over all sex ratio) have gone down. We have presented the real picture. Now it is for the Government to ponder upon the issue and see what can be done,&rdquo; said Director Census department, Farooq Ahmad Faktoo.<br /><br />A top official said the &ldquo;disturbing statistics&rdquo; provided in the provisional data shows that Government has been doing nothing on this front despite many laws and schemes to encourage families to have girl child. The latest figures follow a survey by the state Directorate of Economics and Statistics in 2007-08 which had projected the sex ratio at more than 914.<br /><br />Even the Minister for Health, quoting official figures, recently informed the Legislative Council that the sex ratio is 925 in the state.<br /><br />&ldquo;If the sex ratio has fallen to 883 and child sex ration dipped to 859, then it is a matter of serious concern. It needs to be studied carefully and figure out the reasons for the downward change,&rdquo; said former Director S&amp;E, GA Qureshi under whose supervision the department had carried the survey.<br /><br />However, in an encouraging sign, the state has recorded more literate population than ever before. The total number of literates has jumped to 7,245,053 with 4,370,604 males and 2,874449 females, according to provisional figures. &ldquo;The percentage of literate persons is 68.74 with 78.26 percent males and 58.01 per cent females,&rdquo; the data highlights. During 2001 Census the literacy rate in JK was recorded at 55.5 percent.<br />&ldquo;Though there has been improvement in the literacy rate but the set target of 72 percent has not been achieved,&rdquo; said an official. JK’s sex ratio at new low by Muddasir Ali

In a disturbing trend, Jammu and Kashmir has shown a decline in the child sex ratio in 2011 Census, the figures of which would be released soon. The overall sex ratio has also gone down. While the population has been pegged at more than 1.25 crore, indicating a decadal growth of more than 23 per cent, the literacy rate has shown encouraging trends. The area of grave concern for the state would be drastic fall in the child sex ratio. The provisional data shows that the child sex ratio (0 to 6 years of age) has fallen from 941 in 2001 to 859 in 2011. Not only this, JK’s overall sex ratio has been pegged at 883 females per 1000 males indicating a fall of 9 points compared to 2001 Census, according to provisional figures. While the ratio is 940 at India level, JK along with Bihar (916) and Gujarat (918) has shown decline in sex ratio in comparison to last Census. “It is disturbing and unfortunate that the figures (child sex ratio and over all sex ratio) have gone down. We have presented the real picture. Now it is for the Government to ponder upon the issue and see what can be done,” said Director Census department, Farooq Ahmad Faktoo. A top official said the “disturbing statistics” provided in the provisional data shows that Government has been doing nothing on this front despite many laws and schemes to encourage families to have girl child. The latest figures follow a survey by the state Directorate of Economics and Statistics in 2007-08 which had projected the sex ratio at more than 914. Even the Minister for Health, quoting official figures, recently informed the Legislative Council that the sex ratio is 925 in the state. “If the sex ratio has fallen to 883 and child sex ration dipped to 859, then it is a matter of serious concern. It needs to be studied carefully and figure out the reasons for the downward change,” said former Director S&E, GA Qureshi under whose supervision the department had carried the survey. However, in an encouraging sign, the state has recorded more literate population than ever before. The total number of literates has jumped to 7,245,053 with 4,370,604 males and 2,874449 females, according to provisional figures. “The percentage of literate persons is 68.74 with 78.26 percent males and 58.01 per cent females,” the data highlights. During 2001 Census the literacy rate in JK was recorded at 55.5 percent. “Though there has been improvement in the literacy rate but the set target of 72 percent has not been achieved,” said an official. Mizoram has recorded highest literacy rate of 89.40 percent among 35 states and union territories. JK has child population of 2,008,642 in the age group of 0-6 with 1,080,662 male children and 927,980 female children while population aged 7 and above has been recorded at 10,540,284 with 5,584,899 males and 4,955,385 females. The provisional statistics reveal that population has increased to 1,25,48,926 persons consisting of 66,65,561 males and 58,83,365 females, indicating a share of 1.04 per cent share in total population at national level. The Census 2001 had shown population of the state at 1,01,43,700 with 53,60,926 males and 47,82,774 females. The decadal growth rate is 23.71 percent while as the density (per sq km) is 124. While India’s population has jumped to 1.21 billion, an increase of more than 181 million during 2001-11, according to provisional data of Census 2011, the child sex ratio in India has dropped to 914 females per 1000 males.
