The options include maintaining the present list of dignitaries, reducing it to only to constitutional authorities as directed by the Supreme Court or complete abolition of the red beacon. These options were worked out in consultation with the ministries of home affairs and law.</p><p align="justify">In a follow-up meeting with the SG, sources said, the focus was on restricting the number of dignitaries who can sport a red beacon. Incidentally, even before the SC judgment on red beacons was delivered, Parasaran had got the beacon removed from his official vehicle.</p><p align="justify">While pushing the logic for severely restricting red beacon's use, a section of government has said those needing security on roads have already got the pilot vehicles. The options include maintaining the present list of dignitaries, reducing it to only to constitutional authorities as directed by the Supreme Court or complete abolition of the red beacon. These options were worked out in consultation with the ministries of home affairs and law.</p><p align="justify">In a follow-up meeting with the SG, sources said, the focus was on restricting the number of dignitaries who can sport a red beacon. -The Times of India NEW DELHI: The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Admi Party's rejection of the "VIP culture" and its trappings and the public sentiment it has drawn, seems to have forced a rethink on use of red beacon. The central government is considering pruning the list of those eligible to use red beacon on their official vehicles, source said. However, there is also an opinion that the government shouldn't act in haste since the issue is sensitive, sources said. It is learnt that the road transport ministry has submitted four options to the solicitor general Mohan Parasaran to give an opinion on who should be permitted to use a red beacon that has come to be seen as a status symbol. The options include maintaining the present list of dignitaries, reducing it to only to constitutional authorities as directed by the Supreme Court or complete abolition of the red beacon. These options were worked out in consultation with the ministries of home affairs and law. In a follow-up meeting with the SG, sources said, the focus was on restricting the number of dignitaries who can sport a red beacon. Incidentally, even before the SC judgment on red beacons was delivered, Parasaran had got the beacon removed from his official vehicle. While pushing the logic for severely restricting red beacon's use, a section of government has said those needing security on roads have already got the pilot vehicles. They have been maintaining that such a culture is not there in other vibrant democracies.
