Justin Raj begins each day spending an hour on the banks of the pond inspecting the water. He has to watch out daily for fungus that can harm the fish in it.</p><p align="justify">Justin began the exercise four years ago shelling out Rs 1.5 lakh from his own pocket to save the pond. Today, he has won an award for the best fresh water fish farmer. &quot;It was about four years back I noticed that the pond was dying as waste including drainage, home waste and plastic from different parts were dumped here. The wells in the area showed a decrease in the water levels as the pond was drying up. I had a previous experience of cultivating fish and thought that it can save the pond,&quot; he said.</p><p align="justify">Justin approached the ward councillor with a proposal to start fish farming. After he succeeded in reviving it, the corporation gave him permission to start fish farming in another pond.</p><p align="justify">&quot;We supported him as we want to keep the ponds clean and at the same time promote fish farming. He has given a proposal to take over another pond and we are considering that now, we hope that more people will come forward to take up fish farming,&quot; Councillor B Vinod said.</p><p align="justify">Justin cultivates pearl sport, prawns, lobster, catla and carp in the pond. They are caught once in three to four months, but even for that, he does not engage anyone else.</p><p align="justify">&quot;I started this not for profit. If the ponds are maintained the water levels in our wells will not reduce. But still I make a profit of about Rs 30,000 to 40,000 yearly,&quot; he said.</p><p align="justify">Justin whose main businesses are flowerpot making, landscaping and a plant nursery, has managed to bring about change with the help of his wife Jalaja, children Akshaya and Aashiq, and the fisheries department.</p><p align="justify">At an age when people hardly have the time to think about natural resources this 42-year-old has proved that one can also earn while protecting them. Justin Raj begins each day spending an hour on the banks of the pond inspecting the water. He has to watch out daily for fungus that can harm the fish in it.</p><p align="justify">Justin began the exercise four years ago shelling out Rs 1.5 lakh from his own pocket to save the pond. Today, he has won an award for the best fresh water fish farmer. &quot;It was about four years back I noticed that the pond was dying as waste including drainage, home waste and plastic from different parts were dumped here. The wells in the area showed a decrease in the water levels as the pond was drying up. I had a previous experience of cultivating fish and thought that it can save the pond,&quot; he said.</p><p align="justify">Justin approached the ward councillor with a proposal to start fish farming. After he succeeded in reviving it, the corporation gave him permission to start fish farming in another pond.</p><p align="justify">&quot;We supported him as we want to keep the ponds clean and at the same time promote fish farming. He has given a proposal to take over another pond and we are considering that now, we hope that more people will come forward to take up fish farming,&quot; Councillor B Vinod said.</p><p align="justify">Justin cultivates pearl sport, prawns, lobster, catla and carp in the pond.
