Kerala seems set to experience negative rate of growth of population, much like developed Europe and Japan in the recent decades, trends visible from the provisional results of Census 2011 suggest.

The state recorded its slowest decadal increase in population of 4.8% between 2001 and 2011, or a compounded average annual growth rate of 0.48%. In contrast, the population of the country as a whole rose 17.64% over the decade, while states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh saw a 25% and 20% rise, respectively.

The slowing of population growth is not surprising. The state has been experiencing sharp deceleration in its population growth rate since the decade of 1961-71. For instance, after a rise of 26.29% during that decade, the population growth slowed to 19.24% in 1971-81, and to 14.32% in 1981-91.

Between 1991 and 2001, Kerala emerged as the only state in the country to experience single digit increase in its population. For that matter, the total fertility rate of the state was 1.9 according to the National Family Health Survey of 2005-06, below the 2.1 required to keep the population stable. The corresponding number for the country as a whole was 2.7.

And this is visible in the proportion of children in the age group of 0-6 years in the total population of the state. Kerala set to see fall in population growth by Tina Edwin |
Call it the curse of development.
For Kerala, that is 9.95%, down from 11.91% a decade ago. The national average in the latest Census stood at 13.12% compared to 15.93% a decade ago. Such trends become visible when the vast improvements are recorded on parameters such as infant and maternal mortality, sex ratio and female literacy rate. Kerala has outperformed the rest of India on all of these. For instance, literacy rate among females in Kerala was recorded at about 92%, and that is just four percentage points lower than the literacy rate for males at 96%. Also noteworthy, is difference in male and female literacy rate is the lowest in Kerala. The state has also one of the most favourable sex ratio in the country at 1084, improving from 1058 a decade ago. The national average was 940 in the latest report, up from 933 a decade ago. |
