Kerosene cut due to ample LPG

-The Times of India

The ministry of petroleum and natural gas on Saturday said that kerosene allocation to Gujarat has been reduced, keeping in view the substantial LPG penetration in the state.

Gujarat's monthly quota of kerosene for distribution under the public distribution system (PDS) has been slashed by 32.19% from 76,712 kilolitres (KL) in 2010-11 to 52,020 KL in 2011-12, effective from June 1.

The state government had raised an issue saying that the move would hit poor households. However, the ministry stated that requirement of kerosene for PDS has come down due to an increase in LPG connections in the state.

From 2005-06 to 2010-11, the number of LPG connections in the state has increased by 32%. LPG coverage in Gujarat is 55% as against the national coverage of 53%. Further, about 6.5 lakh households enjoy piped natural gas in Gujarat, the ministry said.

"The state government is vested with the authority to reduce the kerosene allocation of LPG customers and piped natural gas customers. Card holders with LPG connection are not entitled to PDS superior kerosene oil (SKO). With increase in LPG coverage, surplus of kerosene meant for cooking purposes can be diverted for adulteration," a statement from the ministry said.

The ministry further said that the reduction in kerosene quota has also taken place in other states.

Gujarat's per capita availability of kerosene was 15.7 litres per annum in 2010-11. The reduction brings the state in line with the national average of 9.5 litres per person per year.
