National newspapers and even international media described the case as a huge setback to India's polio eradication programme.

Sumi had been admitted to a Kolkata hospital, from where she was picked up by the polio surveillance network for investigation.

As part of surveillance, any child under 15 who suddenly develops floppiness or weakness or paralysis in any part of the body is investigated thoroughly. Such cases are called AFP. Polio is one of the several causes, and not the only cause, of AFP.

Stool samples of all AFP cases are tested to rule out polio as a cause of the illness.

In 2012, around 9,000 AFP cases have so far been investigated by the National Polio Surveillance Programme with the support of local health authorities. All stool samples of these cases have tested negative for polio. Lab tests nail polio rumours by Aarti Dhar |
The case of 18-month-old Sumi in West Bengal received adverse media publicity
The government on Friday confirmed that an 18-month-old girl from West Bengal, who developed Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) earlier this month, tested negative for polio. Her stool samples tested negative for wild polio virus in the examination conducted in the Institute of Serology here. A section of the media flashed the case of Sumi Naskar from South 24 Parganas as polio even as thorough investigations were still being carried out. An update of the AFP cases under investigation and laboratory results is available on the National Polio Surveillance Project website. Surveillance continues India has not reported any case of polio since January 13, 2011 and was struck off the list of countries with active endemic wild polio transmission in February 2012. But the job is not yet done. As the risk of polio persists, surveillance continues to be of the highest sensitivity — detecting and investigating all AFP cases to rule out polio. |
