Two more helicopters are expected to reach by tomorrow to expedite the relief operation.<br /><br />&ldquo;The next 36 hours will be crucial as the water level of the Brahmani is rising,&rdquo; said disaster management minister Surya Narayan Patra.<br /><br />So far, over 21.69 lakh people at 3,128 villages in 10 districts have been affected by the floods in the Brahmani, Baitarani, Budhabalanga and Subarnarekha rivers and their tributaries. The deluge has so far claimed 17 lives.<br /><br />An inter-ministerial team of officials is expected in the state on Tuesday to assess the flood-induced damage. The central team, led by joint secretary of the Union home ministry .P. Mahey, will include officials from the ministries of agriculture, finance, water resources, irrigation and flood control and roads and transport.<br /><br />Ten teams of National Disaster Response Force, totalling 307 men with 60 boats, have been deployed for rescue and relief operations in the flood-affected zones.<br /><br />A boat capsized in the Brahmani near Kanka village in Dhenkanal district, following which 10 people were missing.<br /><br />The body of Aswini Kanungo, a member of the Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force, was found two days after it had been washed away while trying to rescue 60 marooned people at Mathura village under Korei block of Jajpur district on Friday.<br /><br />Acknowledging his act of bravery, the state government today decided to recommend his name to the President of India for awarding a posthumous medal for trying to save others&rsquo; lives. The state government has announced a job for his next of kin and a financial assistance of Rs 6 lakh for his family.<br /><br />There were complaints about relief distribution in parts of Jajpur district. &ldquo;We have been hungry for the past four days. There is no help from the government even after four days of the flood,&rdquo; said Rabindra Mohapatra of Gamu village under Bari block.<br /><br />Reports from Kendrapara said after the flood along the Mahanadi deltaic region, people at villages close to the Brahmani river system were vulnerable to major floods.
