                <p align="justify"><font ></font></p><p align="justify"><br /><font >The State Government has introduced a string of changes to the land acquisition process for industrial purposes, giving farmers the option to either take a stake in the industrialisation process or settle for fair compensation.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >All land being acquired across the State by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board will be eligible for compensation at a rate higher than the market value and not the guidance value fixed by the revenue authorities for each area. Farmers whose lands are acquired can opt for 9,680 sq. ft of industrial land developed by the KIADB for every 44,000 sq. ft of land acquired (nearly one acre), which they can utilise for industrial purposes or even lease it out. Alternatively, farmers can opt for compensation.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa is said to have told senior officials of the Revenue and Industries departments that they should refrain from acquiring wet or irrigated land for industrialisation. Only dry and barren land should be acquired. Deputy Commissioners have been instructed to closely monitor the acquisition process and finalise the compensation.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >Sources in the Government told The Hindu that the Principal Secretary, Department of Commerce and Industries, V.P. Baligar, would oversee the land acquisition process. The Government is acquiring nearly one lakh acres to create a land bank for industries. Preliminary acquisition notification has been issued for 80,000 acres, and final notification for around 25,000 acres.</font></p><p align="justify"><font >Mr. Baligar said: &ldquo;Land acquisition will be effected only with the consent of farmers.
