It also found that about 71 per cent of the downlights lacked BIS certification.

"These spurious products are likely to pose a serious safety hazard for consumers besides causing significant loss in tax revenues for the government," the Electric Lamp and Component Manufacturers' Association (Elcoma) said.

India's LED lighting market has burgeoned to about Rs 10,000 crore from an estimated Rs 500 crore in 2010. The government has been encouraging people to switch to LED bulbs because their lower power consumption can slash electricity bills.

According to the survey, more than half of the LED bulbs lacked Bureau of Indian Standards labels, implying lack of certification and therefore a potential breach of safety standards.

The products need to pass certain tests to gain the certification. LED bulb safety alert -GS Mudur |
-The Telegraph New Delhi: More than half the light emitting diode (LED) bulb brands sold in India breach the safety standards prescribed by the government's Bureau of Indian Standards, a lighting industry association said on Monday, citing a survey by a market research firm. The Nielsen survey has found that 36 to 73 per cent of LED bulb brands sold across 200 retail outlets in four cities failed to comply with the bureau norms, made mandatory by a government directive in October 2012. Nielsen screened 150 brands of LED bulbs and 170 brands of LED downlights -- primarily used across false ceilings -- sold in Ahmedabad, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. In one test, for instance, the LED module needs to safely operate at 150 per cent higher than its rated voltage, current or power without a temperature increase beyond a specified limit.
