Some of the migrant workers said that they left Mumbai during the first Covid-19 outbreak to be with their respective families.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Congress crossed all limits during the first wave of the infection. The party (Congress) gave free train tickets to migrant workers to leave Mumbai...As a result, the Covid spread rapidly in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.”

India Today TV spoke to migrants who left Mumbai in the first lockdown. Most of them left in trucks and those who went on the train had to suffer for weeks before reaching their villages.

Mohammed Imtiaz Ansari, a native of Aurangabad in Bihar, runs a manufacturing unit in Dharavi. He, along with his workers, went to Bihar by train. Describing his journey, Ansari said, " We spent months in Mumbai before trains started. For four days, we tried to manage train tickets. Somehow, we were able to get a train ticket. It took us a week to reach our native village. During that journey we didn't have food. Some NGO's threw food packets inside trains as they didn't want to get infected and that's how we survived. There used to be times when the train took a halt and wouldn't move for a day. After reaching our village, we were quarantined at a school and later allowed to go."
