In its report released on Saturday, the CAG has pointed out that state departments had failed to explain and audit queries/observations involving the around Rs 4,500 crore-loss of the public exchequer.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><div style="text-align: justify">According to the CAG, by June 2013, there were 4,760 outstanding inspection reports and around 10,510 audit observations that the state had not yet answered. Of these, most of the reports involving around Rs 2,000 crore belonged to the revenue and forest, and energy departments.</div><p>&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align: justify">Though the government has complied with a few audit queries made during 2001 and 2012 and has recovered Rs 1,140 crore against the total recoverable amount of Rs 3,704 crore, there is still a Rs 2,500-crore loss that is yet to be recovered .</p><p style="text-align: justify">CAG has lamented the government's lack of response to its audit inspection reports. According to CAG, around 4,799 such inspection reports are yet to be complied with action-taken report by different state departments. Of the total 351 recommendations of the public accounts committee, around 328 are still awaiting the action-taken reports, it observed. Of the total 99 observations pending for action-taken reports, 40 are with the revenue and forest department, 26 with relief and rehabilitation department, and nine each with finance, urban development and home departments.</p><p style="text-align: justify">&quot;It is recommended that the state fixes responsibility for failure to reply to the inspection reports and audit observations within a fixed time-frame, and also for not taking appropriate time-bound action to recover losses and outstanding demands,&quot; the CAG report said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p>               </font>

Maharashtra government sitting on scams involving 4,500 crore, finds CAG report -Chittaranjan Tembhekar

-The Times of India   MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government is still sitting on scams involving losses of around Rs 4,500 crore of public money, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has revealed. In its report released on Saturday, the CAG has pointed out that state departments had failed to explain and audit queries/observations involving the around Rs 4,500 crore-loss of the public exchequer.   According to the CAG, by June 2013, there were 4,760 outstanding inspection reports and around 10,510 audit observations that the state had not yet answered. Of these, most of the reports involving around Rs 2,000 crore belonged to the revenue and forest, and energy departments.   Though the government has complied with a few audit queries made during 2001 and 2012 and has recovered Rs 1,140 crore against the total recoverable amount of Rs 3,704 crore, there is still a Rs 2,500-crore loss that is yet to be recovered . CAG has lamented the government's lack of response to its audit inspection reports. According to CAG, around 4,799 such inspection reports are yet to be complied with action-taken report by different state departments. Of the total 351 recommendations of the public accounts committee, around 328 are still awaiting the action-taken reports, it observed. Of the total 99 observations pending for action-taken reports, 40 are with the revenue and forest department, 26 with relief and rehabilitation department, and nine each with finance, urban development and home departments. "It is recommended that the state fixes responsibility for failure to reply to the inspection reports and audit observations within a fixed time-frame, and also for not taking appropriate time-bound action to recover losses and outstanding demands," the CAG report said.
