Mamata Banerjee attacks PM Narendra Modi for ‘dissolving’ the Planning Commission -Madhuparna Das

-The Economic Times

KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee while welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Digital India' initiative, attacked the government for 'dissolving' the Planning Commission, which she alleged, has affected the federal structure of the nation.

"Earlier, there was at least a Planning Commission. The chief ministers had a platform to voice their views and worries. But now where should we go and speak about such issues?" she said.

Even though Banerjee is likely to meet the Union finance minister in Delhi — she is going to Delhi on Tuesday to attend a seminar on Federalism organised by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal — she said Bengal, Kerala and Punjab are deprived of central funds.

"After the 14th Finance Commission was set up, we were told that there would be a 10% increase in funds flow. But in reality, the Centre had withdrawn at least 39 projects and curtailed its contribution to at least 55 projects. Earlier, in several social sector projects, the state-Centre share used to be 60:40, but now it has come down to 90:10. It is a total disaster in the social sector," the CM said.

Though she praised the Digital India campaign, she said it must be followed by action. "When I was the railway minister in 2001, we had taken a decision to lay a railway optical fibre network. We started the WiFi network in Kolkata and some other towns such as Bardhaman." She reminded people that such initiatives were taken in the past during late PM Rajiv Gandhi's time. "Sam Pitroda was the man behind these efforts earlier," she said.
