Mamata now blames Maoists for Jnaneswari sabotage

-The Hindu

In a volte-face that has created ripples in political circles here, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said it is now a “proven” fact that it was the Maoists who were responsible for the Jnaneswari Express sabotage. She had earlier accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) of being behind the derailment of the train in Paschim Medinipur district on May 28, 2010, in which nearly 150 people were killed.

Ms. Banerjee, in the course of her election campaign for the April-May Assembly polls in the State and as Union Railway Minister, had put the blame on the CPI(M) alleging that it had masterminded the sabotage two days before the elections to several civic bodies across the State (May 30, 2010) in order to discredit her. The facts would one day be revealed, she had then said.

But, speaking at an event here to pay tributes to the two members of the family of a Trinamool Congress activist who were gunned down by the Maoists in the Balarampur area of Purulia district on Monday evening, she pointed out that the sabotage had indeed been perpetrated by the Left-wing extremists who she described as more dangerous than terrorists.

Her observation as Chief Minister, as regards those behind the derailment, is in divergence with the one she had made as Railway Minister and an Opposition leader in the State canvassing for support in the run-up to the polls.

It is only but obvious that it was out of political compulsions and with an eye on the Assembly elections that Ms. Banerjee had accused the CPI(M) of involvement in the train derailment. That compulsion, needless to say, is no longer there.

Ms. Banerjee had refused to budge from her stand on the matter despite her colleague in the Union Cabinet, Home Minister P. Chidambaram clearly stating that according to the Central Bureau of Investigation those responsible for the act of sabotage were members of a frontal organisation of the Maoists.

And even though Mr. Chidambaram might have glossed over Ms Banerjee's persistent allegations of CPI(M) involvement in the train disaster, the Left parties were quick to point out that her charge was not just baseless but also in conflict with the CBI's findings.
