Many schools put admissions on hold by Sruthy Susan Ullas & Garima Prasher

The wait to know whether your child's school admission is confirmed just got longer. Many city schools have put admission on hold, thanks to the confusion prevailing over some provisions of the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

The landmark law, which guarantees every child education, has also made it mandatory for all schools, including private institutions, to set apart 25% of their seats for the under-privileged. Though it was passed in 2009, Karnataka is yet to notify the rules. Many school associations approached the court against a few clauses. As the Supreme Court verdict is pending, many schools have delayed their admissions.

"There's ambiguity in the clause on 25% admissions for the under-privileged. It's not clear whether the admission is to kindergarten or to Class1. In the Supreme Court, arguments by various associations have been heard. No notification has come from the government. Without that, schools are not sure about the intake for each class," said Mansoor Ali Khan, general secretary, Management of Independent CBSE Schools' Association.

"We've stopped admissions for Class 1 onwards and waiting for the government notification. Although we are open for admission to kindergarten, we're not sure if we can do it. Normally, we're not open for admission to higher standards, but the RTE Act has nullified the practice we follow. The list of internal students who will join Class 1 will be prepared only once the rules are clear," said Mahalakshmi Ramesh, secretary, Little Lillys Education Society.

Parents are also worried by this delay. "We've received about 70 queries so far, but we've them to wait till the verdict. We are registering their names, so that we can call them once we start the admission process," said Nigar Sultana, principal, Cambridge Public School. "There's confusion regarding the RTE. Some conditions laid down by the government under certain clauses are the problem. We're not against reservation, but the implementation process is bothering us," said Nigar.

Schools have started issuing registration and enrollment forms. "We are giving enrollment forms but admission will be confirmed only after we receive some concrete information about the process. The admission forms will be given only after that," said Lata Mathew, principal, Deva Matha Central School.
