However, on the issue of reinstatement of 11 dismissed workers, Mr. Siddiqui said the company maintained that the disciplinary action taken was valid given the &amp;ldquo;illegal&amp;rdquo; nature of the June 4 strike. &amp;ldquo;But they are our boys. We are willing to talk things over and arrive at an amicable solution,&amp;rdquo; he added.&lt;br /&gt;

AITUC secretary D.L. Sachdev, who is in charge of the trade union&#039;s activities, said the termination order on the 11 workers should be withdrawn; that the situation prevailing as on June 3 should be maintained and there should be no further victimisation of the striking workers. He also demanded that all the contract and trainee workers taking part in the strike should be retained.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
However, it is learnt that the striking workers are also ready for a formula whereby a few of the workers may serve out brief suspension periods provided most of the 11 dismissed workers are immediately reinstated.&lt;br /&gt;

                <em><br /></em><div align="justify"><em>Signs of softening of stand by management and workers<br /></em><br />The deadlock at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant continued on Sunday amid signs of a softening of stand by both the management and workers. Nearly 2,000 workers are currently on the ninth day of a stay-in strike.<br /><br />While the talks held on Saturday night between Haryana Labour Minister Shiv Charan Lal Sharma and trade union representatives failed to break the impasse, another round of talks scheduled for Sunday had to be cancelled as the Minister was held up with other work.<br /><br />Maruti Suzuki Managing Executing Officer S.Y. Siddiqui said the workers' demand for recognition of their union, Maruti Suzuki Employees' Union, could be accepted only conditionally. &ldquo;We are okay with non-affiliated internal unions for each of our plant. There can also be an umbrella governing council comprising members of each individual plant union to discuss worker and company issues.&rdquo;<br /><br />However, on the issue of reinstatement of 11 dismissed workers, Mr. Siddiqui said the company maintained that the disciplinary action taken was valid given the &ldquo;illegal&rdquo; nature of the June 4 strike. &ldquo;But they are our boys. We are willing to talk things over and arrive at an amicable solution,&rdquo; he added.<br /><br />AITUC secretary D.L. Sachdev, who is in charge of the trade union's activities, said the termination order on the 11 workers should be withdrawn; that the situation prevailing as on June 3 should be maintained and there should be no further victimisation of the striking workers. He also demanded that all the contract and trainee workers taking part in the strike should be retained.<br /><br />However, it is learnt that the striking workers are also ready for a formula whereby a few of the workers may serve out brief suspension periods provided most of the 11 dismissed workers are immediately reinstated.<br /><br />Shiv Kumar, general secretary of the striking union, said the workers were concerned about the loss incurred by the company and were open to options like working on Sundays and holidays to compensate.<br /><br />Senior CPI leader and AITUC general secretary Gurudas Dasgupta in a letter to the Prime Minister on Sunday alleged that Maruti Suzuki was violating Indian labour laws. He criticised the State and Central Governments for &ldquo;denying them the basic right of having trade unions and withholding congenial service conditions, even forcing them to work at low wages&hellip;We want economic growth; we want industrial development; but can it be at the cost of the workers?&rdquo;<br /><br />Meanwhile, a joint action committee of trade unions in the Gurgaon-Manesar belt held a meeting on Sunday to reaffirm its support for the striking Maruti workers. Nearly 40 trade unions will hold gate meetings outside their respective companies on Monday, stop work for a two-hour tool-down strike on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and begin a daylong strike if the Maruti workers' issues are not resolved by Tuesday.</div>               </font>

Nearly 2,000 workers are currently on the ninth day of a stay-in strike.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While the talks held on Saturday night between Haryana Labour Minister Shiv Charan Lal Sharma and trade union representatives failed to break the impasse, another round of talks scheduled for Sunday had to be cancelled as the Minister was held up with other work.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Maruti Suzuki Managing Executing Officer S.Y. Siddiqui said the workers&#039; demand for recognition of their union, Maruti Suzuki Employees&#039; Union, could be accepted only conditionally. &amp;ldquo;We are okay with non-affiliated internal unions for each of our plant. There can also be an umbrella governing council comprising members of each individual plant union to discuss worker and company issues.&amp;rdquo;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, on the issue of reinstatement of 11 dismissed workers, Mr. Siddiqui said the company maintained that the disciplinary action taken was valid given the &amp;ldquo;illegal&amp;rdquo; nature of the June 4 strike. &amp;ldquo;But they are our boys. We are willing to talk things over and arrive at an amicable solution,&amp;rdquo; he added.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;AITUC secretary D.L. Sachdev, who is in charge of the trade union&#039;s activities, said the termination order on the 11 workers should be withdrawn; that the situation prevailing as on June 3 should be maintained and there should be no further victimisation of the striking workers. Siddiqui said the workers' demand for recognition of their union, Maruti Suzuki Employees' Union, could be accepted only conditionally. &ldquo;We are okay with non-affiliated internal unions for each of our plant. There can also be an umbrella governing council comprising members of each individual plant union to discuss worker and company issues.&rdquo;<br /><br />However, on the issue of reinstatement of 11 dismissed workers, Mr. Siddiqui said the company maintained that the disciplinary action taken was valid given the &ldquo;illegal&rdquo; nature of the June 4 strike. &ldquo;But they are our boys. We are willing to talk things over and arrive at an amicable solution,&rdquo; he added.<br /><br />AITUC secretary D.L. Sachdev, who is in charge of the trade union's activities, said the termination order on the 11 workers should be withdrawn; that the situation prevailing as on June 3 should be maintained and there should be no further victimisation of the striking workers. He also demanded that all the contract and trainee workers taking part in the strike should be retained.<br /><br />However, it is learnt that the striking workers are also ready for a formula whereby a few of the workers may serve out brief suspension periods provided most of the 11 dismissed workers are immediately reinstated.<br /><br />Shiv Kumar, general secretary of the striking union, said the workers were concerned about the loss incurred by the company and were open to options like working on Sundays and holidays to compensate.<br /><br />Senior CPI leader and AITUC general secretary Gurudas Dasgupta in a letter to the Prime Minister on Sunday alleged that Maruti Suzuki was violating Indian labour laws. He criticised the State and Central Governments for &ldquo;denying them the basic right of having trade unions and withholding congenial service conditions, even forcing them to work at low wages&hellip;We want economic growth; we want industrial development; but can it be at the cost of the workers?&rdquo;<br /><br />Meanwhile, a joint action committee of trade unions in the Gurgaon-Manesar belt held a meeting on Sunday to reaffirm its support for the striking Maruti workers.
