Maruti strike: Trade union leader Sonu Gujjar quits with Rs 40 lakh payout by Vikas Dhoot & Chanchal Pal Chauhan

The key faces behind the recent labour unrest at Maruti Suzuki that cost India's largest carmaker Rs 1,600 crore in lost revenues have quietly resigned from the company, pocketing payouts worth several lakh and leaving their one-time comrades both dazed and angry.

By Wednesday, 30 suspended workers at Maruti's Manesar plant, including their two leaders Sonu Gujjar and Shiv Kumar, had quit the company, taking home amounts ranging between Rs 16 lakh and Rs 40 lakh, several people familiar with the matter said. Gujjar and Kumar, both of whom have gone incommunicado, are said to have resigned by October 22 for a full and final settlement of around Rs 40 lakh each.

The remaining 28, who remained suspended along with Gujjar and Kumar despite the strike ending on October 19, resigned over the past 10 days and took home settlement amounts of around Rs 16 lakh. A spokesman for Maruti confirmed to ET that all 30 suspended workers had resigned and had "taken their full and final settlement from the company".

The development, barely 12 days after work resumed at Maruti's Manesar plant following a 13-day strike from October 7-19, the last of three strikes this year, ended, will knock the wind out of the sails of the fledgling workers movement at the plant. It could, some workers say, also give the company an upper hand in any future interactions with them. At the heart of the dispute between the workers and the company was the formation of a new union at the Manesar plant, which Maruti was opposed to.

Rishi Pal, one of the suspended workers, said he resigned on Wednesday and received a cheque for Rs 16 lakh. Pal said he and others were left with little option but to resign, especially after it emerged that Gujjar and Kumar had left the company. "At the time of the (strike) settlement, the 30 of us had decided we would stick together whatever the consequences. When Sonu and Shiv resigned despite our reservations, we also followed suit," Pal said.

Pal said the workers had been indicted in an internal inquiry conducted by the company and had decided to leave with payouts. "The company has offered us the negotiated amount which is our severance package in lieu of resignation from services," Pal said.
