                <div align="justify">-The Times of India</div><p align="justify"><br /><em>UDAIPUR: </em>Despite restrictions on growing BT Cotton (Bacillus thuringiensis) in the state, mass cultivation of the crop has been reported at various tribal-dominant tehsils in Udaipur adjoining Gujarat.</p><p align="justify">BT cotton is a genetically modified (GM) variety of cotton which produces an insecticide that has been restricted for cultivation in the state due to harmful effects like causing skin diseases and allergies in farmers producing it. Studies reveal that BT-toxin is toxic to humans and mammals and triggers immune system disorders.</p><p align="justify">In the tribal tehsils of Jhadol and Kotra, farmers have been reported to be indulging in mass production of the crop without seeking permission from the administration or the authorities of agriculture department. &quot;On getting complaints of the same, a team of agriculture department was sent to inspect the regions recently from where officials have collected samples of the cotton crop and sent them to Sriganganagar and Durgapura laboratory at Jaipur to test whether they belong to the BT variety,&quot; Ramesh Jaroli, the deputy director, agriculture, said.</p><p align="justify">&quot;Farmers are free to enter into MoU with any company or contractor for producing any crop of non-BT variety, however, for cultivating BT crop, a prior permission from the government is required. "The vulnerable living conditions of farmers in Jhadol and Kotra make them fall an easy prey to the Gujarati contractors who persuade them to produce the crop at cheap rates without letting the cultivators know about the complexities involved," opined Sudheer Verma, deputy director, agriculture.
