Mahto, who was in desperate need of the money, then retaliated by saying he would not work for Rajwar any more. An infuriated Rajwar then thrashed Mahto so severely that the latter collapsed on the ground. <br />

Although villagers rushed him to the K M Memorial Hospital, doctors there declared him brought dead, police said. <br />
<br />
Harla OC Rabindra Pratap Singh said based on a complaint of the victim's wife Rakhiya Devi, an FIR has been lodged against Rajwar and three others.<br />

An MGNREGA worker was allegedly thrashed-to-death by his contractor for demanding wages for the well digging work he had done at Bathua village under Harla police station here on Sunday.
Sources said the deceased, Subal Mahto (50), a resident of Bathua, was assigned the task of digging a well along with four others under the MNREGA scheme at his village by the contractor, Bhaghirath Rajwar. They had been asked by Rajwar to dig a 15 feet deep well.
However, the workers dug a well about 10 feet deep and promised to complete the remaining work later. On Saturday, which is usually the weekly payment day for the workers, Mahto approached Rajwar with his associates for the wages. He requested him for the money showing his need to purchase foodgrains for his family.
Mahto requests for the weekly payment, however, fell on deaf ears.
Rajwar refused to make the payment saying they must complete the entire work first.
Mahto, who was in desperate need of the money, then retaliated by saying he would not work for Rajwar any more. An infuriated Rajwar then thrashed Mahto so severely that the latter collapsed on the ground.
Although villagers rushed him to the K M Memorial Hospital, doctors there declared him brought dead, police said.
Harla OC Rabindra Pratap Singh said based on a complaint of the victim's wife Rakhiya Devi, an FIR has been lodged against Rajwar and three others.
"The accused are absconding. Police investigation is on," Singh said.
