Monsoon 2023 to be below normal amid El Nino threat, forecasts Skymet - Economic Times

Private weather forecaster Skymet expects the upcoming June-September monsoon to be 'below normal' to the tune of 94% of the long period average (LPA), raising concerns about food grain production in the country. In January, Skymet had forecast the monsoon 2023 to be sub-par and now retains the same outlook.

"Courtesy Triple-Dip-La Nina, southwest monsoon observed above normal/normal rainfall for the last four consecutive seasons. Now, La Nina has ended. Likelihood of El Nino is increasing and its probability to become a dominant category during the monsoon is growing large. El Nino return may presage a weaker monsoon," said Jatin Singh, Managing Director, Skymet.

Farmers typically start planting summer-sown crops from June 1, when monsoon rains usually reach India. Planting then continues until early August. A below-normal monsoon could hurt the food production in the country at a time when there are fears that unseasonal rains in March could impact Rabi crop production.
