Montek pat, cash for Bihar

-The Telegraph

Bihar today drew praise from Planning Commission deputy chairperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia for faring better than other states on per capita income.

"Bihar's overall performance during 2012-13 has been very good and its growth in per capita income has been better than the country as a whole. Although the state started with a low base, this still is a remarkable growth," he said after a meeting with chief minister Nitish Kumar.

"We are pleased the state has done particularly well in improving its gross state domestic product and has improved its productivity in agriculture and related sectors."

Earlier, Ahluwalia approved the state's proposal for a Rs 34,000-crore plan for 2013-14, which translates into a 34.4 per cent increase in outlay over the previous financial year.

An elated Nitish thanked the Centre, saying the hike in plan size would help improve development indicators in the state. "We had proposed a Rs 34,000-crore plan in our annual budget even though there was no confirmation from the Planning Commission," he said.

Nitish said the state's main development priorities in 2012-13 had been social services, infrastructure, agriculture and allied sectors, irrigation, flood control and the energy sector.
