Pune: About 1200 personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will be deployed for relief and rescue operations as cyclone Lehar is expected to hit coastal Andhra Pradesh by Thursday. The rescue and evacuation operations which involve teams from the defence paramilitary forces will include 30 NDRF teams, each consisting of 40 personnel, according to Alok Awasthy, commandant of Pune-based fifth NDRF battalion.

While 10 teams from Vijaywada-based 10 Battalion have been assigned the task, 10 teams from Bhubaneshwar battalion (known as Mundli Battalion 3), six teams from Arakolam-based fourth battalion and four teams from Pune-based fifth battalion will be joining shortly, Awasthy said. Four teams from NDRF Pune will be leaving by Tuesday evening and reaching Vijaywada by tomorrow.

According to Awasthy, the NDRF was put on alert on Monday evening. While the fifth battalion team consists of four medical officers, one medical officer, all the teams deployed will be equipped with medical, rescue equipment as well as cutters, Awasthy said.

Referring to details shared by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Awasthy said that cyclone Lehar is expected to hit coastal Andhra at about 11 am at a speed of about 170- 180 km per hour.

The IMD website on Tuesday afternoon said, "The very severe cyclonic storm Lehar over southeast Bay of Bengal moved westwards with a speed of 15 km per hour during past six hours and lay centred at 11.30 hours IST of today, the 26 November 2013 over southeast Bay of Bengal about 360 km west-northwest of Port Blair, 990 km east-southeast of Machillipatnam, 920 km east-southeast of Kakinada and 870 km southeast of Kalingapatnam.

The system would intensify further and move west-northwestwards and cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machillipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada around 28 November noon."

The IMD predicted extensive damage to 'kutcha houses', disruption of power and communication line, disruption of rail and road traffic, potential threat from flying debris, flooding of escape routes and extensive damage to agricultural crops in north coastal Andhra Pradesh. The IMD bulletin at 2 pm recommended total suspension of fishing operations and mobilisation and evacuation from these coastal areas.
