NEERI team arrives in Kolhapur to assess river pollution

-The Times of India

KOLHAPUR: A team of three experts from the National Environment Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) arrived in Kolhapur on Monday to study the impact of pollution on the Panchganga river.

The experts held meetings with officials of the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC), the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and environmental experts.

"The team conducted a series of meeting on day one. The team is expected to visit locations by tomorrow. We are providing all the necessary data and information available with us to the NEERI," said a KMC official.

NEERI has been appointed by the Bombay High Court (HC) to prepare a report on the status of the river pollution. Following the visit, the team will start working on a draft plan that will be submitted to the high court.

"We are collecting primary information and we will visit the locations that contribute to the river's pollution. Our report will be directly submitted to the HC," a NEERI official said.

The draft report of NEERI is supposed to include a critical evaluation of the current systems, monitoring and suggestions for mitigation measures. The study will take around two months, during which NEERI officials will be visiting various locations on the Panchganga banks.

As per NEERI's plan, its draft report would cover generation, collection, treatment and final disposal systems, including treated and untreated water.
