                <div style="text-align: justify">-The Indian Express</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Giving a pointer to the much-awaited Bill on land acquisition reforms, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said the government will not dilute the provisions which restrict the acquisition of multi-crop and single crop agricultural land for non-farming purposes.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">&ldquo;We will ensure that acquisition of high-yielding farmland is not allowed for non-agriculture purposes. This is a serious issue and the government is concerned about it. One should not be allowed to acquire farm land where single or multiple crops are grown,&rdquo; Pawar said in response to a query during the Economic Editors&rsquo; Conference in Delhi.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Pawar, who heads the Group of Ministers on Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, said such a move can be allowed only in exceptional situations.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">He, however, supported FDI in multi-brand retail trade. He said while farmers will witness a dip in post-harvest losses along with better prices, consumers will benefit from lower prices, greater choice and better quality.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Pawar, who was unhappy with the government on its ambiguous agriculture export-import policy, sought consistency in this regard and said the government should not refrain from exports when country has surplus production.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Highlighting the fact that agri exports have witnessed a 56 per cent jump over 2010-11, he said, &ldquo;Switch-on and switch-off policy brings disrepute to the country. The way our agricultural production is going, time has come now to introduce a long-term export-import policy. This is a serious issue and the government is concerned about it. One should not be allowed to acquire farm land where single or multiple crops are grown,&rdquo; Pawar said in response to a query during the Economic Editors&rsquo; Conference in Delhi.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">Pawar, who heads the Group of Ministers on Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, said such a move can be allowed only in exceptional situations.</div><div style="text-align: justify"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify">He, however, supported FDI in multi-brand retail trade. ‘No acquisition of fertile land for non-farm use’

-The Indian Express Giving a pointer to the much-awaited Bill on land acquisition reforms, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said the government will not dilute the provisions which restrict the acquisition of multi-crop and single crop agricultural land for non-farming purposes. “We will ensure that acquisition of high-yielding farmland is not allowed for non-agriculture purposes. This is a serious issue and the government is concerned about it. One should not be allowed to acquire farm land where single or multiple crops are grown,” Pawar said in response to a query during the Economic Editors’ Conference in Delhi. Pawar, who heads the Group of Ministers on Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, said such a move can be allowed only in exceptional situations. He, however, supported FDI in multi-brand retail trade. He said while farmers will witness a dip in post-harvest losses along with better prices, consumers will benefit from lower prices, greater choice and better quality. Pawar, who was unhappy with the government on its ambiguous agriculture export-import policy, sought consistency in this regard and said the government should not refrain from exports when country has surplus production. Highlighting the fact that agri exports have witnessed a 56 per cent jump over 2010-11, he said, “Switch-on and switch-off policy brings disrepute to the country. The way our agricultural production is going, time has come now to introduce a long-term export-import policy. We should allow exports when we have surplus and allow imports when there is a shortfall.”
