No fireworks, Delhi breathless -Sapna Singh

Diwali is four days away, and the state of Delhi’s air has gone to the dogs with the National Air Quality Index (NAQI) stating on Sunday that air pollution has spiked to severest “dark red”, strengthening arguments of many who claimed that the Supreme Court was “misled into believing that banning firecrackers during Diwali would clean city’s air”.

The worsening pollution level substantiates their argument that the problem lies somewhere else, not with firecrackers: stubble burning, vehicular emission, construction and road dust.

The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) marks pollutants values “dark red” only when the concentrations are above the moderate level which is 85 for PM 2.5 and 150 for PM10 in Micro Cubic Per Gram (µgm-3), said an environmentalist.

A unit of Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), SAFAR, noted the average value of primary pollutant was found to be 123µgm-3, while the prescribed upper limit is 60 µgm-3.

According to some environmentalists and Meteorological experts, with north-westerly winds blowing towards Delhi, air quality in Delhi will remain very poor.

Beside the meteorological factors, the crucial factor pertaining to high concentration of Suspended Particulate matters (SPMs) in city air is the burning of agricultural waste in Haryana, Punjab and some parts of Uttar Pradesh.

The pollution data recorded at 8.30 pm on State owned pollution meters of Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) termed air quality “severe”.

RK Puram area, which is considered as green area of the Capital, has recorded six times higher pollutant values. The DPCC marked PM 10 value at 683 µgm-3.

At Anand Vihar area, which is already marked as “red zone” in terms of air pollution, values of PM 10 and PM 2.5 were recorded at 581 and 154 (in µgm-3). In Mandir Marg, values of both the pollutants were recorded at 202 and 97.
