Notice over shortage of TN doctors

-The Telegraph

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report about the problems being faced by patients because of the shortage of doctors in government hospitals in Tamil Nadu.

Around 80 per cent of the state's seven crore people are dependant on government hospitals.

The commission noted that according to Medical Council of India regulations and recommendations of the World Health Organisation, one lakh doctors are required in Tamil Nadu, whereas the current workforce in the government hospitals is 18,000.

Because of the dearth of doctors, thousands of patients have to wait for long in queues every day at the government hospitals. Patients have to wait for months for a surgery, triggering clashes between their families and medical and paramedical staff.

Expressing serious concern over the situation, the commission has issued notices to the chief secretary and the health secretary seeking a report within eight weeks on the following points:

• The total number of hospitals and other health-case facilities run by the Tamil Nadu government at all levels - district headquarters, taluks, etc

• The total sanctioned strength of doctors and paramedical staff in the government hospitals and other health-care facilities

• The number of vacant posts of doctors and paramedical staff

• The steps taken by the government to address the shortage of doctors and paramedical staff
