Odisha Farmers Reluctant to Grow Rabi Crops

-The New Indian Express

DHENKANAL: The farmers of the district feel discouraged to grow rabi crops after they bore the brunt of crop damage due to erratic and scanty rainfall during kharif season.

Sources said farmers of almost all the blocks are not showing  interest to take up cultivation in the rabi season.

Considering the plight of the farmers, the district agriculture department has decided to grow paddy in 534 hectares (ha) against 1,900 ha last year. Non-paddy crops like sunflower, mustard, moong and pulses under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, Bringing of Green Revolution in Eastern India scheme and National Food Security Mission (NFSM) will be cultivated in 92,000 ha, said Deputy Director of Agriculture Chhabindra Behera.

Official sources said irrigation facility was available for 33,000 ha in the last rabi crop season while its coverage has been reduced to 28,033 ha this year.

Behera said due to limited water resources, farmers are being encouraged to go for non-paddy crops in all blocks during rabi season.

Meanwhile, as many as 658 pumpsets under various subsidised schemes and adequate fertilisers have been supplied to farmers, he added.

On the other hand, the water level in dams, including Dadarghati near Parjang, is not up to the mark due to poor rainfall. There is only 18 per cent irrigation facility in rabi season against 46 per cent in kharif, Behera said.

Tribal leader Akshay Pany said in Kankadahada block, tribals are facing a tough time as the lands provided to them under Forest Rights Act (FRA) are yet to be developed for cultivation by the district administration. Exclusion of their names from NFSM and crop loss in the kharif season have made lives of tribals miserable unlike previous years, he added.
