One in every 5 patients doesn't need knee replacement: Delhi Doctors -Durgesh Nandan Jha

-The Times of India

NEW DELHI: For someone with a stiff and painful knee, replacing the joint with an artificial implant may sound promising for better mobility and less pain. But the big question is it really needed?

Top orthopaedic surgeons in the country say nearly one out of every five patients approaching them for total knee replacement (TKR), mostly for a second opinion or surgery, may do well with lifestyle changes and minor repairs instead.

"Nearly 20% of patients who come for knee replacements do not need it," says Dr J Maheshwari, director and chief of knee and shoulder services at Max Saket hospital.

A total knee replacement, done mostly for patients suffering from age-related arthritis, involves replacing the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint with mechanical ones.

Physiotherapy can be alternative to knee surgery

Total knee replacement (TKR) should ideally be the last resort - when a patient's pain and immobility persists despite weight reduction, physiotherapy, arthroscopic surgery or partial replacement, said Dr J Maheshwari of Max Saket hospital. "TKR is so popular and commonly available these days that it has become the easily prescribed procedure. We see so many patients below 60 years of age who come for TKR. They would do well without it," Dr Maheshwari added.
