Opposing land auction, farmer leader shot dead by Navjeevan Gopal

A farmer union leader was shot dead and two people were injured following a scuffle with a group led by a commission agent during the auction of a farmer’s land at Beero Ke Khurd village in Mansa district. Pirthi Singh, 38, of Chak Ali Sher village was shot in the chest, said police. The injured are Lachhman Singh and Tarsem Singh. The incident occurred around 3 pm. Pirthi was the vice-president of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Dakonda), Budhlada block, and had come to Beero Ke Khurd along with other members of the union to oppose the auction of a piece of land belonging to one Bhola Singh. The land measuring over an acre was being auctioned on the orders of a local court that had fixed Monday for the job. Union members alleged that there had been no buyer for the land and learning this, the village patwari and a kanungo had left the place. “But a commission agent and his goons returned in the evening along with the naib tehsildar concerned. When farmers objected to the auction, they opened fire,” alleged Kulwant Singh Kishan, state committee member of BKU (Dakonda), who claimed to be an eyewitness to the incident. “The farmers were raising slogans to register their protest and were prevented by the group led by the commission agent, Ram Kishan, and the naib tehsildar, Subhash Mittal, from entering the auction site. With the farmers resisting the move, the group fired a number of rounds at the farmers, killing Pirthi Singh and injuring two others,” said Kulwant. Lakhwinder Singh, brother of the deceased, blamed Mittal for the murder. “I hold him (Mittal) responsible for my brother’s death. He should not have returned with the commission agent when the patwari and the kanungo had already declared that there were no takers for the land meant for auction,” he said. Mittal, who is the Naib Tehsildar of Bareta and is holding the additional charge of Budhlada, refuted the allegations. “When I reached Beero Ke Khurd around 3 pm, a scuffle was already. I had gone there to perform my duty as I was bound to obey the court orders. Sensing trouble, I started to leave the place, when I heard the bullet shots,” he claimed. Mansa SSP Hardial Singh Mann said a case of murder had been registered against Ram Kishan, his son Parveen Kumar, brother Vijay Kumar, Naib Tehsildar Subhash Mittal, one Nek Singh of Joyiyan village, one Jeet Singh of Beero Ke Kalan and three more people who were yet to be identified. He said the naib tehsildar should have taken a police party along. According to Mann, Bhola Singh had taken a loan from Ram Kishan against the piece of land in question, which he was yet to pay back.
