The Environment ministry had laid down 28 conditions while giving clearance to POSCO. These say that the total green area within the plant will be 25 per cent. Also, the risk and disaster management plans due to floods and cyclones along with mitigation measures shall be prepared and submitted.&lt;br /&gt;

Though POSCO has deposited Rs 104 crore with the Orissa government for compensatory afforestation, the state has no clue when the remedial measures will be taken up.&lt;br /&gt;

                <br /><div align="justify">An ecological catastrophe is in the making in Orissa where more than six lakh trees are being cut at the POSCO site in Jagatsinghpur district for the south korean steel plant.<br /><br />The farmers in Orissa are protesting against the felling of six lakh trees at the POSCO site. More then 50,000 have already been cut down and nearly six lakh more trees are to go. The district administration is going ahead with the felling despite the protests<br /><br />&quot;I had come to protect my trees which I had grown from my childhood, but the police thrashed me and I could not save my trees,&quot; said Kusha Behera, villager, POSCO site.<br /><br />The thick casuarina trees in this area are natural shield against the cyclones. In 1999, when the super cyclone struck there was not a single casualty from the villages here with the trees protecting the people from the killer winds.<br /><br />&quot;Now I am so scared and do not have any idea how we will be saved from the cyclone. The trees were so precious for us. These say that the total green area within the plant will be 25 per cent. Orissa: 6 lakh trees cut for POSCO? by Jajati Karan

An ecological catastrophe is in the making in Orissa where more than six lakh trees are being cut at the POSCO site in Jagatsinghpur district for the south korean steel plant. The farmers in Orissa are protesting against the felling of six lakh trees at the POSCO site. More then 50,000 have already been cut down and nearly six lakh more trees are to go. The district administration is going ahead with the felling despite the protests "I had come to protect my trees which I had grown from my childhood, but the police thrashed me and I could not save my trees," said Kusha Behera, villager, POSCO site. The thick casuarina trees in this area are natural shield against the cyclones. In 1999, when the super cyclone struck there was not a single casualty from the villages here with the trees protecting the people from the killer winds. "Now I am so scared and do not have any idea how we will be saved from the cyclone. The trees were so precious for us. It saved our lives," said Laxmi Behera, fisherwoman, Naulasahi village. But now with the green cover vanishing, a disaster could be waiting to happen. "Rehabilitation has not been done, the sea wall has not been built. f cyclone comes who will save us now. Naveen Patnaik or the POSCO people will not be here to save us," said Tamil Pradhan, POSCO supporter. The Environment ministry had laid down 28 conditions while giving clearance to POSCO. These say that the total green area within the plant will be 25 per cent. Also, the risk and disaster management plans due to floods and cyclones along with mitigation measures shall be prepared and submitted. Though POSCO has deposited Rs 104 crore with the Orissa government for compensatory afforestation, the state has no clue when the remedial measures will be taken up. "This is no complaint from my disaster management department about any threat of disaster due to cutting off of the trees," said Surya Naryan Patra, Revenue and Disaster management minister. Many are surprised by the fact that when a proper MoU is not in place and litigation still pending in the court over POSCO project, how could the Orissa government go ahead with this massive cutting of trees which could lead to an environment disaster.
