                <div align="justify">-The Times of India</div><p align="justify"><em>PATIALA (Punjab)</em>: Even as Haryana is going to elections amid political parties' claims about development, a recently published study in a reputed economic journal has revealed that over 80% farmers in the state are reeling under debt.</p><p align="justify">The study also exposed that nearly a same number of farmers are living below poverty line if one goes by the World Bank's definition of &quot;moderate poverty&quot;, which means an earning of $2 per day.</p><p align="justify">A part of the study has been recently published in the latest issue of &quot;Indian Journal of Economics and Development&quot;.</p><p align="justify">Going by this latest study, economic condition of farmers in Haryana is not any better than farmers of neighbouring Punjab, where, as per studies, around 89% farming households are under debt.</p><p align="justify">Based on interviews of 535 peasant families, the survey was conducted by Dr Gian Singh and Veerpal Kaur, professor and research scholar respectively at department of economics, Punjabi University, Patiala.</p><p align="justify">The study interviewed 535 families in 23 villages of three districts of Haryana -- Yamunanagar, Bhiwani and Sirsa -- which are highest, medium and lowest agricultural productivity districts respectively.</p><p align="justify">&quot;It is found that 80.56% of farming households in Haryana are under debt. Over 84% marginal farmers are under debt, whereas figure is 80.25% and 79.46% in case of small and medium farming households respectively&quot;, read the research paper published in the journal.</p><p align="justify">Commenting on the causes behind the indebtedness, Gian Singh said, &quot;Haryana farmers are reeling under debt not due to policies of state, but of Central government. $disp = '<div align="justify">-The Times of India</div><p align="justify"><em>PATIALA (Punjab)</em>: Even as Haryana is going to elections amid political parties' claims about development, a recently published study in a reputed economic journal has revealed that over 80% farmers in the state are reeling under debt.</p><p align="justify">The study also exposed that nearly a same number of farmers are living below poverty line if one goes by the World Bank's definition of &quot;moderate poverty&quot;, which means an earning of $2 per day.</p><p align="justify">A part of the study has been recently published in the latest issue of &quot;Indian Journal of Economics and Development&quot;.</p><p align="justify">Going by this latest study, economic condition of farmers in Haryana is not any better than farmers of neighbouring Punjab, where, as per studies, around 89% farming households are under debt.</p><p align="justify">Based on interviews of 535 peasant families, the survey was conducted by Dr Gian Singh and Veerpal Kaur, professor and research scholar respectively at department of economics, Punjabi University, Patiala.</p><p align="justify">The study interviewed 535 families in 23 villages of three districts of Haryana -- Yamunanagar, Bhiwani and Sirsa -- which are highest, medium and lowest agricultural productivity districts respectively.</p><p align="justify">&quot;It is found that 80.56% of farming households in Haryana are under debt. Over 84% marginal farmers are under debt, whereas figure is 80.25% and 79.46% in case of small and medium farming households respectively&quot;, read the research paper published in the journal.</p><p align="justify">Commenting on the causes behind the indebtedness, Gian Singh said, &quot;Haryana farmers are reeling under debt not due to policies of state, but of Central government. Prices of major farm inputs like diesel and fertilizers are decided by the Centre, which also decides minimum support price for crops. Broadly, increase is prices of agricultural produce is not in proportion to increase in other commodities.
