Paddy farmers can now opt for SRI and get Rs 10,000 per hectare |
-The Navhind Times
To give a boost to the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method of paddy cultivation in the state, the government has come... PANAJI: To give a boost to the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method of paddy cultivation in the state, the government has come up with a promotional incentive scheme wherein Rs 10,000 per hectare will be provided to farmers opting for the method to cultivate rice. "An incentive of Rs 10,000 per hectare will be given to the farmers who cultivate paddy according to the SRI method. However, the minimum area eligible is 1,000 square metres. There is an ambitious target to cover 1,000 ha under SRI in Rabi crop in 2013-14," said director of agriculture P Tufani. He said that the scheme will also give boost to the area covered under SRI in the state apart from increasing the overall production of paddy. Tufani said 225 ha area is already covered under SRI (Rabi crop) and 700 ha is likely to be covered by March 31, 2014. "The farmers were under the impression that the row planting and cono weeder operations would require additional labourers and were always demanding promotional incentives at Rs 10,000 per hectare on pro rata basis," he said. Explaining about the SRI method of paddy cultivation, Tufani said that it was initially introduced by the government on a trial basis at government farm at Dhave in Sattari with the help of some progressive farmers from the taluka during the Rabi crop in 2008-09. The plot used for paddy cultivation under SRI method recorded yield as high as 79 quintals per hectare as against 36 quintals per hectare of yield recorded in plots where paddy was cultivated by using traditional methods. The trials were repeated with Kharif crop in 2009-10 and it was found to be effective with a yield of 55 quintals per hectare as against 28 quintals recorded for traditional method of paddy cultivation. Tufani also said that proper aeration should be maintained and weeding operation should be undertaken at an interval of ten days with cono weeder. According to the assistant director of agriculture Sanjeev Mayekar, the yield under SRI method increases about one to one and half times, irrespective of the variety of paddy used. He, however, said that Karjat-3 is the most suitable and popular variety. Stating that the state government has provided the farmers with various schemes to boost paddy cultivation in the state, Mayekar said that farmers, especially the younger generation should take interest in farming.
