Once the emergency signal is triggered, the CCTV cameras will start displaying live footage from inside the bus at the police central control room set up exclusively to deal with such incidents.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;em&gt;New Delhi: &lt;/em&gt;The government has decided to make it a must for all public buses owned by state transport corporations to have emergency panic buttons, surveillance cameras and vehicle-tracking devices to ensure the safety of women passengers.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A formal notification on the rules will be issued after June 2, Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari said in the capital today.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The minister made the announcement while launching a pilot project under which the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation will run 10 luxury and ten ordinary &amp;quot;Nirbhaya&amp;quot; buses equipped with emergency buttons and CCTV cameras.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;To ensure safety of women after the unfortunate Nirbhaya incident, we have decided to make it mandatory for public transport buses to install emergency panic buttons, CCTV cameras and GPS-enabled vehicle-tracking devices,&amp;quot; Gadkari said.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
He was referring to the December 2012 Delhi gang rape of a 23-year-old who was assaulted inside a moving bus and later succumbed to her injuries, triggering outrage across the country.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;quot;We are looking at installation of panic buttons, CCTV cameras and other devices at the manufacturing stage itself. Buses manufactured in the future should come up with these features or the state transport departments can make them a pre-condition while ordering vehicles,&amp;quot; the minister said.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The ministry had issued these draft rules earlier this month under the Motor Vehicles Act and had sought comments from stakeholders, including vehicle manufacturers.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
According to the proposed notification, vehicles with a seating capacity of over 23 passengers will have CCTV cameras that will be connected to the global positioning system (GPS) and monitored by the local police control room.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In case of an untoward event, Gadkari said, a woman passenger would be able to press the emergency button provided with every seat, transferring the information to the nearest local police station through GPS, the space-based navigation system that provides location and real-time information.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Once the emergency signal is triggered, the CCTV cameras will start displaying live footage from inside the bus at the police central control room set up exclusively to deal with such incidents.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Besides, if a vehicle deviates from its prescribed route, the GPS-enabled system will start sending signals tracking its movement to the control room.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

Once the emergency signal is triggered, the CCTV cameras will start displaying live footage from inside the bus at the police central control room set up exclusively to deal with such incidents.<br />

Besides, if a vehicle deviates from its prescribed route, the GPS-enabled system will start sending signals tracking its movement to the control room.<br />

Buses with fewer than 23 seats must have emergency buttons and GPS trackers.<br />

Women and child development minister Maneka Gandhi, who was present when Gadkari made the announcement, said panic buttons should be introduced in trains also.
