Mumbai: If you are one of those who cross the road when the green signal is on, then its time you stop. A study conducted by Mumbai traffic department has revealed that majority of those who die on Mumbai's roads are pedestrians.

The study was conducted between 2008 and 2012.

"Pedestrians' account for majority of the deaths on Mumbai's roads. This is followed by bikers," said Vivek Phansalkar, joint commissioner of police (Traffic).

As per official figures, a majority of the 58% of the annual fatalities involve pedestrians. The second highest deaths comprise people on two-wheelers, be it bikes, scooters or bicycles. A total of 30%.

During 2008-2010, an average of 615 people lost their lives. Thereafter, there was a sharp decline in accident cases that resulted in deaths. In 2011, 566 died, while in 2012, the death toll came down to 485.

"People don't care much about safety issues. There is a need to inculcate certain habits among pedestrians and encourage them to use skywalks and pavements. In the past, we have conducted a campaign asking people to use skywalks. Despite this, they prefer jaywalking.

Though there are subways outside Churchgate and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, people still cross the road. This is classic example of pedestrians being careless," added Phansalkar.

Ashok Datar, transport expert, said, "There should be more of defensive driving that offensive driving. Furthermore, there is no accountability of pavements space. They just do not meet required norms. There should be good quality of footpaths to walk on. There are hawkers who occupy the space, but there should some space designed only for them so that they pedestrians are not bothered. Another reason is irresponsible parking. Those who park on pavements make it unusable for pedestrians."
